A ball end milling cutter is also known as a "ball nose mill". The end of this tool is ground with a full radius equal to half of the tool diameter, and the edges are center cutting. They can be single end or double end and they can be made from solid carbide or various compositions of high speed steel. They can be general purpose or high perfomance geometries. They can be used used for milling a large corner radius, grooving with a full radius, and contour or profile milling. The smaller diameters can be used for engraving. They are available in a wide variety of standard sizes and lengths.
These mills are general purpose carbide mills, with an extra extra long flute length (approx. 7+xD), two or four cutting edges, and a center cutting full radius or "ball" on the end. The term "general purpose" means that the flutes have a 30 helical spiral and the OD grind has a standard primary and secondary clearance angle. They can be used for plunging, grooving, side milling, and profile cutting. They are available uncoated and AlTiN coated. They are available in a wide variety of diameter sizes from 1/4" to 1" and overall lengths up to 12".

Instructions: Slowly dial up the RPMs on your router to the recommended maximum. Then, dial back if needed to find the sweet spot. The sweet spot is the speed at which the least resonant vibration is present. If the sweet spot cannot be achieved within 5,000 RPMs of the max, check the collet for residue or other debris and start over.
