the 1st bath drill local freight train trainmaster bob

On my railroad, this is a popular switching assignment. The 1st Bath Drill spots loads of coal on the Keystone Cement coal dump track and pulls the empties. Any loaded cars of cement that are ready to go are picked up and weighed on the track scale.

Harvey Cohen operates a scrap yard that brings in the scrap from various sources, sorts it into grades then resells it to steel mills. Some cars of scrap are interchanged to the Lehigh Valley Railroad to move to Bethlehem Steel in Bethlehem, PA. Other scrap loads move west to supply the Bethlehem Steel Mill at Lackawanna, New York which is near Buffalo.

The Lehigh and New England interchanges a few cars everyday. Anthracite coal loads for on line destinations. Bituminous coal loads to spot to Keystone Cement. Loaded box cars of merchandise from one line manufacturing plants, and empty cars returned via reverse route are received.

On arrival, the 1st Bath Drill crew performs all of its pull work. Pulling the empty coal cars from the coal track, pulling loads of cement from Keystone Cement and weighing them, pulling any cars released from Cohens Scrap Yard, and pulling the cars received from the Lehigh and New England Railroad interchange track.

The 1st Bath Drill crew works from a printed switch list. I use Google Sheets to make my train consist and switch lists. These are printed out on 8.5 X 11 paper. The design of the list allows it to be folded in half showing the information needed to handle the car to the proper destination on the front side of the folded paper.

I use a numbering system for my track and industry spots based on the system used by the Burlington Northern Railroad when I was a yard clerk. Each town had a straight line map showing the track numbers and industry spot numbers. These were called SPINS charts. SPINS was the acromion for Shippers Perpetual Industry Numbering System.

On the prototype, the Main Track was normally Track 99. The Siding Track was normally Track 98. If a second siding track or spur was located beside the main track to set out and pick up from it was normally Track 97.
