Hello, I am surprised to not find the brand Chasseur3? a historical brand of Invicta France for thei cookware. Their cocotes are used by the bext chefs not only in France, and their quality is equal to Le creuset and cheaper. Professional actually noticed that the main cooking part are the same and the surrounding is actually more friendly and producing less carbons for cooking than le creuset.

Both Cauldron and Crucible are containers for heating items, but Crucible in English is more focused toward industrial uses where Cauldron is used more to describe a cooking vessel.

It may not have the set-it-and-forget-it convenience of a drip coffee maker or the cachet of a pour-over kit, but if you're looking for a quick and uncomplicated way to make a great cup of coffee, the French press (also known as a press pot) is hard to beat. The best French presses have a simple design, but the marketplace is littered with all sorts of subtle variations on the form, each one claiming innovation and vying for supremacy: glass versions, plastic versions, stainless steel versions; press pots that are insulated or double-filtered or oversized.

We spent two weeks brewing and plunging and sipping our way through a slew of well-regarded presses in an array of materials, shapes, and sizes. The goal: to find the best French pressone that produces a superior brew and can withstand intensive everyday use. The Bodum Chambord was the first French press I ever owned, fresh out of college, and over the years it's one I've returned to again and again. Chances are, if you've ever ordered press coffee at a cafe, it was made in a version of the Chambord. Designed in the 1950s, the chrome frame and glass carafe are what most people envision when they picture a French press. But when I embarked on these tests I had to wonder: did the Chambord become ubiquitous because it really outperforms the pack? Or just because it has been around so long?

When I lined the Chambord up with the rest of the contenders and put them all through the same tests, I was struck (and, I admit, pleasantly surprised) by how impressively it still held its own. The Chambord looks great right out of the box and its matte black polypropylene handle (which has a subtly retro look, like Bakelite) feels comfy and secure in the hand. The double-filtering combo of the fine mesh filter and perforated steel plate plunges smoothly and effortlessly into the carafe while still remaining tight enough to keep the coffee clean and grit-free. And that brew tastes really, really great: bright, clean, and balanced, but with enough body to remind you that you're drinking press coffee, not drip or pour-over. The press comes apart seamlessly after brewing and the pieces are easy to rinse and clean.

The Chambord's Achilles' heel is its glass body, which comes with two downsides. One: if you're even a teeny bit klutzy you will eventually break it. That said, it's easy to replace: a spare beaker can be ordered online for just $20. The second drawback: glass has very little insulating power, so if you want to drink your coffee hot, you better start sipping as soon as it's been plunged. Or, just do what I do and transfer the fresh brew to a thermos to keep it warm. (Doing so also reduces the chance that the coffee will get bitter from sitting too long on the grounds.) Ultimately, given how reliable and attractive the Bodum Chambord is, and how high-quality the coffee is that it produces, neither of these things feel like deal breakers.

A final note on price: compared to its competitors, the Chambord came across as a real value, delivering top-notch styling and serious coffee at a very reasonable cost. But it is possible to get an almost identical Bodum model, the Brazil, for more than half the price. The only difference between the two presses is one of form, not function: instead of a chrome frame, the cage around the Brazil's carafe is plastic. Our preference is to eliminate household plastic wherever possible, but if budget is an issue for you, the Brazil is a great buy.

Remember when I said that if you're even a teensy bit klutzy you will eventually break the glass carafe? If you're particularly accident prone, consider buying a stainless steel French press instead. Stainless steel presses look sleek and feel a bit more company-worthy, transitioning easily from the kitchen to the dining table. Many, like the SterlingPro model, have the added bonus of being double-walled for insulation, so you don't have to worry about your coffee going tepid before the second cup. The drawback is that they also tend to be significantly pricier than their glass and plastic counterpartsbut that's why we were intrigued to see how the SterlingPro, which is even cheaper than the Chambord, performed.

My husband and I have been brewing our morning coffee with a French press for close to two decades, so the process is already one of my everyday rituals. If you're going to use a press every day, you want it to be easy to clean. With that in mind, we paid attention to how hard the filter was to rinse, whether the carafe was easy to scrub, and whether the parts were dishwasher-safe.

After studying a wide range of reviews, articles, and Amazon user comments, we settled on seven French presses to test across three categories: glass carafe, insulated stainless steel, and insulated plastic. In the glass category, the Espro P3, which has garnered lots of praise from critics and Amazon users, was the tightest competitor with our top pick, the Bodum Chambord, and after using it a few times, its charms were clear. The unique bucket-shaped filtering system did the most thorough job of separating the grinds from the brew of any of the presses we tested, yielding coffee that was bright and clean tasting, with barely a trace of sediment in the cup. XJet is our only Israeli manufacturer, founded by Hanan Gothait. The company is best known for its innovative NanoParticle Jetting technology that could revolutionize metal and ceramic manufacturing. The French Pollen AM recently unveiled two new 3D printers, a ceramic and a metal. The latter is also based on the indirect metal manufacturing process MIM (for Metal Injection Molding) and uses metal granules 316L stainless steel, titanium and 17-4 stainless steel. Their 3D metal printer, the PAM Series M, is available from 68,900, one of the lowest prices on the market.

Exaddons 3D metal printer, the CERES Print System can print metal with a resolution as fine as 1 m, offering a very high level of detail. It has a chamber volume of 100 x 70 x 60 mm and prints at room temperature, with no post-processing necessary. Additionally, it can also print overhanging parts without any need for support structures, a rarity among metal AM technologies.

ADMATEC is a Dutch company founded in November 2013 after the success of a research project in 2012. It has developed its 3D metal printer, the AdMetalFlex 130, which is based on Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology. The machine mixes a photosensitive resin and a metallic powder, and uses a laser to fuse them in the same way as its 3D ceramic printer. The company has also introduced the Admaflex 300, a multi-material 3D printer that can print with both advanced ceramic and metals.

SPEE3D was founded by Byron Kennedy and Steven Camilleri with the goal of making metal part manufacturing easier. So its hardly surprising that their SPEE3D printers enable a low-cost manufacturing process for metal additives worldwide. Thats because the power of kinetic energy is used for the process, rather than expensive high-powered lasers or gases. The company offers four products, ACTIVAT3D Copper, LightSPEE3D, WarpSPEE3D and SPEE3Dcell, with the latter three each being metal printers. The LightSPEE3D and WarpSPEE3D 3D printers can print metal parts with diameters of 350 mm x 300 mmm and 1000 mm x 700 mm, respectively, and are the worlds first metal 3D printers with patented SPEE3D technology. The manufacturer particularly emphasizes the excellent speed and low price. The SPEE3Dcell is integrated with a heat treatment furnace and a CNC 3-axis milling machine and is perfect for prototyping. The last product that SPEE3D offers is the ACTIVAT3D copper. This is an antimicrobial copper that can be quickly applied using SPEE3D technology. In the current Covid 19 pandemic, antimicrobial copper surfaces can be incredibly useful for manufacturers, especially those working in the medical field.

Inetyx is a French manufacturer who has developed a metal printer which uses the AMW (Additive Micro Welding) process. In the place of using powder, this machine deposits metal strips of rectangular section which will be micro-welded by laser. The AMW 300X printer has a printing volume of 300 x 300 x 300mm. the top 50 biggest mining companies in the world

The MINING.COM Top 50* most valuable mining companies added a combined $50 billion in market capitalization over the three months to end March, a sharp slowdown compared to previous quarters, as the commodities rally cools and gold suffers its worst first quarter in decades.

Measured from the height of the pandemic in March-April last year the index has now recovered by an astonishing $636 billion thanks to a boom in spending on green infrastructure not only in China, but across Europe and the US.

An indication of how widespread the rally in mining stocks was the past year is the fact that a year ago a valuation of just over $4 billion secured a company a spot in the Top 50 while today, number 50 on the list, Tianqi Lithium, is valued at more than $8.5 billion. Companies around the $4 billion market cap mark now sit in the mid-60s.

Iron ore prices back above $170 a tonne lit a fire under the top producers, boosting BHP, Rio Tinto, and Fortescues value this year and (with help of roaring platinum group metals) lifted Anglo American to position number four, the highest rank in years for the company with roots stretching back more than a century to Johannesburg.

One of the biggest mining IPOs since Glencore in 2011 came on the back of the steelmaking raw materials performance with Brazils CSN Minerao debuting at 47 with a market value of over $9 billion as at 31 March. The mining unit of steel giant Companhia Siderrgica Nacional currently produces about 33 million tonnes of ore per year, but has ambitious plans to triple that over the next decade.

The combined value of gold, silver and streaming companies in the ranking now make up 16% of the index, down from 26% when gold prices were peaking in the third quarter of last year. The sector has lost over $50 billion in value since its peak, led by Barrick Gold, which bled more than $14 billion since end-September 2020.

Thats in stark contrast to platinum group metal producers which have jumped in the ranking Impala is up 27 spots after a 360% jump and Anglo American Platinum has added 250% in value in US terms and now sits just outside the top 10. The Johannesburg-listed counters not only benefited from soaring PGM prices, but also a strengthening rand.

Freeport McMoRan is up nearly 400% from its covid-lows last March, joined by other base metal miners in the top performers list. KGHM briefly dropped out of the Top 50 at the end of the first quarter but is now back at no 42 and Vedanta returns to the ranking at 34 from 53 a year ago.

Another indication of how broad-based the rally from pandemic lows a year ago is that among the worst performers only two companies Shandong Gold and Coal India actually showed a decline in value in US dollar terms over the past year.

As with any ranking, criteria for inclusion are contentious issues. We decided to exclude unlisted and state-owned enterprises at the outset due to a lack of information. That, of course, excludes giants like Chiles Codelco, Uzbekistans Navoi Mining, which owns the worlds largest gold mine, Eurochem, a major potash firm, Singapore-based trader Trafigura, and a number of entities in China and developing countries around the world.

For instance, should smelter companies or commodity traders that own mostly minority stakes in mining assets be included, especially if these investments have no operational component or warrant a seat on the board?

Levels of operational or strategic involvement and size of shareholding was another central consideration. Do streaming and royalty companies that receive metals from mining operations without shareholding qualify or are they just specialized financing vehicles? We included Franco Nevada, Royal Gold and Wheaton Precious Metals.

Vertically integrated concerns like Alcoa and energy companies such as Shenhua Energy where power, ports and railways make up a large portion of revenues pose a problem as do diversified companies such as Anglo American with separately listed majority-owned subsidiaries. Weve included Angloplat in the ranking as well as Kumba Iron Ore.

Many steelmakers own and often operate iron ore and other metal mines, but in the interest of balance and diversity we excluded the steel industry, and with that many companies that have substantial mining assets including giants like ArcelorMittal, Magnitogorsk, Ternium, Baosteel and many others.

Head office refers to operational headquarters wherever applicable, for example BHP and Rio Tinto are shown as Melbourne, Australia but Antofagasta is the exception that proves the rule. We consider the companys HQ to be in London, where it has been listed since the late 1800s.

Interesting, is it not that the top 50 mining stocks capitalisation only amounts to 1/4 of the $USD created from thin air in one year.(or for that matter, that none of the men toiling to dig it from the bowels of the art demand to be paid in specie, as was the norm, for example as recently as during the excavation of the Panama Canal)

Briquette is another form of fuel that can be produced from coffee by-products, which is more devoted to household boiler or stove markets. Coffee husk briquettes were mainly developed in South American countries (Brazil, Costa Rica). The production of briquettes was tested both in a laboratory setup (hydraulic press, applied pressure of 10 tons), and also with sawmill machines (mechanical and hydraulic piston press) (Fonseca Felfli etal.,2011; Suarez and Luengo,2013). Coffee husks can be easily transformed into briquettes since this biomass presents a homogeneous particle size and low moisture content (1015 wt.%). The production of coffee husk briquettes is mainly limited to the local market in Brazil (Fonseca Felfli etal.,2011). The sailing distance is limited to 300km around the manufacturing plants; beyond this distance it becomes economically unviable to deliver. Another problem with coffee husk briquettes is caused by their high friability, which may generate excessive quantities of dust during their transport. A potential way to avoid this drawback is the introduction of 1020 wt.% of sawdust in the coffee husk before briquetting. Despite this constraint, four Brazilian companies produce high-quality briquettes and export their production in the United States and in Europe. The briquettes price ranges from 50 to 150 /t depending on the transport distance. Ciesielczuk etal. (2015) reported on another work on the preparation of briquettes containing 10 or 25 wt.% of SCG blended with beechwood sawdust. The developed process consists in a cold briquetting using a Hocker Polytechnik press, which operates at 120 bars. In the present case, the targeted market corresponds to Poland.

Spent coffee grounds have been used to produce compressed fuel logs in the west of France since 2012 (Limousy etal., 2015). Different suppliers distribute currently these logs to the French domestic market. The RID Solution Company uses a log maker (Fig.11.1) equipped with a maintenance rail and circular saw to produce logs with 300mm length and 90mm of diameter. It operates at a temperature of 120C and a pressure of 2 tons/cm2, and has a production capacity of 1.5 tons/h. Different formulations were developed these last years, containing from 20 wt.% of spent coffee ground blended with pine sawdust until 100 wt.%. Only formulation containing 20 wt.% SCG was industrially developed because it met the needs of the NF bois de chauffage labeling (Fig.11.2). In the present industrial process, it is necessary to dry the raw SCG due to its initial moisture ranging between 40 and 55 wt.%. Hence, a drier operating temperature of 400C at the inlet and of 70C at the outlet is used for the moisture removal. The SCG leaves leave the drier with residual moisture lower than 10 wt.%.

During the production of coal briquettes, coal dust is mixed with starch paste and water before heating and compression into an ovoid shape. The starch provides structural support to the briquette shape and ensures that the structure is maintained during transport of the briquette to the oven on the conveyor belt. An alternative is the use of a cold water swelling starch and an amount of water that is just sufficient to make the starch sticky. Once the briquette is dry, starch provides another interesting functionality that is appreciated during the actual use of the briquette. When starch is exposed to high temperatures as during combustion, a decomposition process starts. Among the possible decomposition pathways, one leads to the formation of a carbon skeleton that no longer burns but acts as a supporting structure for the briquette, increasing exposure of the coal to the air flow. This results in more regular combustion and glowing of the briquette.

DRI can be produced in powder, pellet, lump, or briquette form. The powder, pellets, and lumps retain the shape of the iron oxide material fed into the DR process. The removal of oxygen leaves voids, giving the DRI a spongy appearance when viewed through a microscope. Thus, DRI in these forms has a lower apparent density, greater porosity, and more surface area than iron ore. In the hot briquetted form, it is known as hot briquetted iron (HBI). Fluidized bed DRI is usually processed to HBI due to the difficulty of using fines in steelmaking, and the reactivity of fines to oxygen, even when cool. Typical physical properties of DRI forms are shown in Table 1.

HBI is produced by molding hot (ca. 700 C) DRI into pillow-shaped briquettes using a pocketed roll press. The lower surface area and higher density of HBI makes it 100 times more resistant to reoxidation. The high density, strength, and minimum water absorption make it ideally suited for merchant applications where shipping, handling, and storage characteristics are important.

DRI containing several percent C may be produced where the benefit of added carbon in steelmaking outweighs the added cost. The carbon can be as iron carbide (cementite, Fe3C), or graphitic carbon. The carbon contained in shaft-furnace DRI is typically over 90% Fe3C. Fluidized bed processes for producing iron carbide from ore fines have been developed, but none are presently operating.

DRI retains the chemical purity of the iron ore from which it is produced. It therefore tends to be very low in residual elements such as copper, chromium, tin, nickel, and molybdenum. Typical ranges of DRI chemistry are 9094% total iron, 8389% metallic iron, 6.59% iron oxide, 0.82.5% carbon, 2.86% gangue, 0.0050.09% phosphorus, and 0.0010.03% sulfur.

DRI normally has at least 90% of the oxygen removed, with the unreduced oxide present as wustite. Processes producing solid with <90% reduction are classified as prereduction processes. Prereduced iron is not acceptable for steelmaking, but can be used as a feed for ironmaking (e.g., feed for a BF).

Although it is theoretically possible to convert all the iron oxide to metal, it is not economically feasible. Reduction slows significantly in the last stages, and to complete the reduction would require low production rates. In practice, the DRI is discharged with a small amount of iron oxide remaining. In addition, during cooling prior to discharge, iron in the DRI reacts with the CO and CH4 in the cooling gas to form cementite according to:

The carbon content can be adjusted within limits by operating changes in the DR process, and is typically between 1% and 2.5% Calthough it can be higher by adjusting the composition and amount of cooling gas. During melting in an EAF, the iron oxide and carbon in the DRI react to form metallic iron and CO. The CO evolution enhances the steelmaking reactions, and the oxygen used to oxidize the extra carbon improves the energy balance. Most steelmakers prefer slightly more carbon than is required to balance the remaining iron oxide.

The gangue content of DRI is typically comprised of oxides such as SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, MgO, TiO2, K2O, Na2O, MnO, etc., and for gas-based processes, is dictated by the chemistry of the iron ore used. The phosphorus is normally in the form of P2O5. Sulfur content depends on the sulfur level in the ore and reductant, and the amount of sulfur released or absorbed by the DRI during reduction. The gangue content of DRI produced by coal-based processes may be considerably higher, owing to the retention of some of the coal ash by the DRI.

When handling, shipping, and storing DRI, care should be taken to avoid oxidation. This requires the material be kept cool and dry. If not, oxidation of DRI can take place by two mechanisms: corrosion and reoxidation. Corrosion occurs when the metallic iron in DRI is wetted with fresh or salt water, and reacts with oxygen from the air to form rust, Fe(OH)3. The corrosion reactions continue as long as water is present. Corrosion is very exothermic, but as long as water is present, the temperature does not reach much above 100 C. Reoxidation occurs when the warm metallic iron in corroding DRI reacts with oxygen in the air to form either Fe3O4 or Fe2O3. The reaction continues as long as the DRI remains hot, and oxygen is available. Owing to the exothermic nature of reoxidation, and the insulating nature of bulk DRI, the DRI temperature increases and accelerates the reoxidation rate. In comparison, HBI is almost twice as dense as DRI and thus does not absorb much water. It is much more resistant to corrosion and reoxidation. Several methods of passivating DRI have been developed, but none are as effective as hot briquetting.

Specialized formulations have been successfully developed for specific control situations. Solid controlled-delivery compositions (briquettes) are able to direct B. thuringiensis or B. sphaericus at surface and/or subsurface feeding zones for mosquito larvae (Levy et al., 1997). Conidia of B. bassiana have been formulated in a wax powder to control varroa mites on honeybee (Meikle et al., 2008). Oil emulsions have been formulated for application to cattle using a motor-driven spray unit for tick control (Leemon et al., 2008). Injections of foaming formulations have been used to coat termite galleries with blastospores of entomopathogenic fungi in living trees (Dunlap et al., 2007). Insect cadavers containing nematodes have been coated to maintain the integrity of the cadaver until being applied to pots for insect control of soil pests (Shapiro-Ilan et al., 2001, 2003, 2010). Wettable granules have been evaluated for simultaneous application with a water spray, to stick granules to the foliage. Baits have been evaluated to induce feeding of housefly adults to initiate infection by the housefly salivary gland hypertrophy virus, which shuts down fly reproduction (Geden, 2012). These examples of highly specific formulations will not likely result in a grand expansion in the application of bioinsecticides, but they may fill niche pest control opportunities.

A promising new application system that is being developed for use is a combination of foliar granules (FGs). FGs are designed to adhere to aerial parts of plants when applied; the analogous description of sticky glue balls is apt. They are applied in a dry state and wetted at the time of application with a wet applied granule system (WAGS), which is actually a granular applicator equipped with a water spray system that wets the granules after they have left the applicator. Once contacted by water, the FG instantly becomes very sticky via partial dissolution of biopolymers, such as proteins or various carbohydrates. The FG products are generally smaller than 0.5mm; however, this is much larger than the particle size of solids that are sprayed through the typical nozzles used for foliar treatment, so spray drift is virtually eliminated. Because the viscosity of an airborne particle can be much higher than what is sprayed, the adhesion functionality of these wetted granules can allow for positive adhesion without much runoff of the formulation. Tank mix and pumping stability of the FG bioinsecticide is not an issue, nor is disposal of leftover mixtures and dealing with bioactive liquid spills.

Olive residues, PKE (see Fig. 13), shea meal, and other residues such as sunflower husks and citrus pulp pellets are currently produced in the Mediterranean, South East Asia, Indonesia, South America, and Africa and exported to Western countries for use as fuel in power stations. Other examples of biomass fuels on the market are peanut husks, cocoa meal, coconut fiber, and soy residue. They are all by-products from other primary products like olive oil and palm oil. Many are traditionally used for animal feed but have in recent years found an alternative market as fuels for power generation.

Chips and dust are the formats requiring least postharvest processing and are often the cheapest fuel if local production is available. Chipping can be done directly in the forest using a mobile plant. The chips are typically between 10 and 50mm. They can be milled to form wood dust (sawdust). They have the advantage that they can be stored in the open as long as they are carefully monitored for self-heating and spontaneous ignition. But their bulk density is substantially lower than that of pellets, so transport will be more expensive per unit of energy.

Pellets and briquettes are generally more cost effective to transport due to their higher bulk density of typically 600700kgm3 and are less prone to hang-up in the bunkers and conveyors. They are, though, considerably more expensive to produce. Pellets are biofuel compressed into small cylinders with a typical diameter of 515mm and a length of 1050mm (Fig. 10). They have a higher and more standard bulk density than the raw materials and being clean and dry (<10% moisture) they are easier to transport and handle. They can be stored much longer than other wood sources but they can be very dusty and must be stored under cover and dry. There are techniques like torrefaction and steam explosion that can give a pellet that is water resistant so they can be stored in the open and increase bulk density and calorific value, which is better from a transport and storage point of view. They are also more expensive to produce, but commercial quantities are starting to reach the market.

Biomass can also be delivered to the power station in bales. This format is mostly used for straw and requires special equipment to remove strings and break up the bales or a plant designed specially to burn bales. Bales are relatively easy to transport and have a good bulk density. They can also be stored in the open for shorter periods of time. A modern large bale can weigh 300500kg.

Forestry residues are any part of the tree remaining when the primary product (logs) has been removed. These residues are collected and either chipped in the forest or compressed into bales and transported from the forest by lorry for chipping by the end user, which again requires specialized equipment, that is, a chipping plant.

Manufactured fireplace logs (firelogs) are made from waste wood to provide open-hearth warmth and ambience with clean fuel. Wood briquettes are similar products of smaller length that are used as barbecue fuel or industrial stoker fuel.

There are two types of firelogs or fuel logs; one type is made with the addition of around 50% wax. The other type is all wood. In the USA wax-type logs are more popular, but the all-wood type is more popular throughout the rest of the world. Wax-type logs burn with fewer gaseous emissions to the air, but they do emit carbon compounds from nonrenewable fuel that lead to an increased greenhouse effect. All-wood logs do not emit nonrecyclable carbon.

All-wood logs are made in machines that apply pressure with screws or pistons. The heat developed in the process is sufficient to cause the lignin in the wood to flow and act as a binder for the particulate wood waste. Many machines to make fireplace logs are designed to take advantage of the heat generated by high pressure and do not use supplementary heat. Other machines have extrusion cylinders that are externally heated to temperatures between 180C and 300C. Electrical resistance coils provide heating, and after the manufacturing process starts a temperature control setting permits operation at an optimum temperature level. The heating process slightly carbonizes the surfaces of the logs or briquettes and gives them a dark brown color. Heating may also contribute to better particle adhesion and less friction in the extrusion process.

Briquettes are made in the same ways as all-wood logs, but the log lengths from the machines are cut into thin disks. In developing countries brickmaking presses have been adapted for briquetteing. In these cases pressures are lower and inexpensive adhesives are used as binders.

The wax-sawdust firelog manufacturing process is not used for producing briquettes, only for fireplace logs. Wax-sawdust logs are composed of about 4060% wax with the remaining portion being sawdust. The heat content of wax-sawdust logs is higher than all-wood logs. Compared to wood, which has a high heating value of about 20MJkg1 (8500Btulb1), wax-sawdust logs have a heat content of 36.4MJkg1 (15700Btulb1).

Alginate was discovered by Stanford in 1881, but it was not until 1923 that exploration of its potential really began when Thornley established a briquette business using alginate as a binder of anthracite dust. In 1927 he moved his company to San Diego, California, to produce alginate to seal cans. After some difficulties, the company changed its name to Kelp Products Corp and in 1929 it was reorganized as Kelco Company. Alginate production then started on a large scale in San Diego, California. Production in the United Kingdom was established in the period 19341939 and in Norway some years later, after World War II (McHugh, 1987).

Kaku and Chandler developed a process for the preparation of coffee tablet [61]. The roasted coffee is compressed in a roller press (briquette press) to form a tablet which is then crushed to provide and agglomerate, and later introduced into a sachet for beverage preparation. In an alternate method, coffee tablet is prepared by mixing ground coffee with hydrophilic substance. The hydrophilic substances absorb water. Then the mixture is compressed into tablet form. The tablet is used in preparation of coffee drink [62]. Coffee tablets with integrated aroma are obtained by combining the dry instant coffee with roast coffee aroma concentrate. The coffee tablet is packaged in retail containers similar to those used for pharmaceutical tablets [63].

There are numerous other uses of starch that make up many niche markets. Starch is an excellent binder and is used in the manufacture of charcoal briquettes, ceramics, sand molds, gypsum board, crayons, and chalk. Starch used as a binder in foundry applications is expected to grow to over 61 million kg. By using starch in ceramics, few hazardous air pollutants are released during firing in contrast to the pollutants released by bitumen, pitch, or lignin sulfate.

Starch has a long history in the textile industry, but the volume used has declined as the industry has moved out of the US. About 80% of the starch consumed in textiles is used as warp sizing. Most of the starches used in warp sizing are modified. Various starches are coated onto yarn to increase strength and abrasion resistance during weaving, which are removed by washing (desizing) the finished fabric. Starches are also used for textile finishing. The finishes are intended to improve the appearance, feel, and draping qualities of the material.

Starches are used in oil-field applications as viscosity modifiers and to prevent drilling-fluid losses. Drilling fluids are thixotropic solutions used to cool the drilling bit and to suspend solids. High viscosity is needed at low shear to suspend solids and low viscosity is needed at the high shear region around the drill bit where rapid fluid movement is needed to cool the bit. High viscosity is also needed to reduce drilling fluid loss. Starch use as drilling fluids is restricted because starch stability above 107C is limited, it is highly susceptible to bacterial degradation, and starch solutions have reduced permeability when injected into cores.

Chemicals are produced from starch either by fermentation or biochemical production. Because starch yields pure dextrose upon hydrolysis, it is now being used in many fermentation processes. Ethanol is the chemical produced in greatest quantity from starch. Other chemicals produced from fermentation include acetic acid, citric acid, lysine, lactic acid, and gluconic acid. The fermentation of glucose to lactic acids, from a mass balance point of view, is better than fermentation of glucose to ethanol. The molar yield of lactic acid is 2mol of lactic acid per mole of glucose where commercial strains are used in anaerobic fermentation. Fermentation of lactic acid does not produce carbon dioxide as ethanol fermentation does. Other alcohols besides ethanol can also be fermented from converted starch or glucose such as butanol and isopropanol. Butanol and acetone can be produced by one of the oldest industrial bacterial fermentation processes (Weizman process) dating back to 1916. The yield of solvent and the ratio of butanol and acetone vary depending on the bacterial species used. Other chemicals can also be fermented from glucose such as butyric acid, formic acid, and acetaldehyde.

Polyhydroxy compounds can be made from starch. Glucose is the most common polyhydroxy compound obtained from starch. Yields obtained from acid or enzymatic depolymerization are 9095%.
