machine gun | history, description, & facts | britannica

Machine gun, automatic weapon of small calibre that is capable of sustained rapid fire. Most machine guns are belt-fed weapons that fire from 500 to 1,000 rounds per minute and will continue to fire as long as the trigger is held back or until the supply of ammunition is exhausted. The machine gun was developed in the late 19th century and has profoundly altered the character of modern warfare.

Modern machine guns are classified into three groups. The light machine gun, also called the squad automatic weapon, is equipped with a bipod and is operated by one soldier; it usually has a box-type magazine and is chambered for the small-calibre, intermediate-power ammunition fired by the assault rifles of its military unit. The medium machine gun, or general-purpose machine gun, is belt-fed, mounted on a bipod or tripod, and fires full-power rifle ammunition. Through World War II the term heavy machine gun designated a water-cooled machine gun that was belt-fed, handled by a special squad of several soldiers, and mounted on a tripod. Since 1945 the term has designated an automatic weapon firing ammunition larger than that used in ordinary combat rifles; the most widely used calibre is .50 inch or 12.7 mm, although a Soviet heavy machine gun fired a 14.5-millimetre round.

From the introduction of firearms in the late Middle Ages, attempts were made to design a weapon that would fire more than one shot without reloading, typically by a cluster or row of barrels fired in sequence. In 1718 James Puckle in London patented a machine gun that was actually produced; a model of it is in the Tower of London. Its chief feature, a revolving cylinder that fed rounds into the guns chamber, was a basic step toward the automatic weapon; what prevented its success was the clumsy and undependable flintlock ignition. The introduction of the percussion cap in the 19th century led to the invention of numerous machine guns in the United States, several of which were employed in the American Civil War. In all of these either the cylinder or a cluster of barrels was hand-cranked. The most successful was the Gatling gun, which in its later version incorporated the modern cartridge, containing bullet, propellant, and means of ignition.

The introduction of smokeless powder in the 1880s made it possible to convert the hand-cranked machine gun into a truly automatic weapon, primarily because smokeless powders even combustion made it possible to harness the recoil so as to work the bolt, expel the spent cartridge, and reload. Hiram Stevens Maxim of the United States was the first inventor to incorporate this effect in a weapon design. The Maxim machine gun (c. 1884) was quickly followed by othersthe Hotchkiss, Lewis, Browning, Madsen, Mauser, and other guns. Some of these utilized another property of the even burning of smokeless powder: small amounts of the combustion gas were diverted through a port to drive a piston or lever to open the breech as each round was fired, admitting the next round. As a result, during World War I the battlefield was from the outset dominated by the machine gun, generally belt-fed, water-cooled, and of a calibre matching that of the rifle. Except for synchronizing with aircraft propellers, the machine gun remained little changed throughout World War I and into World War II. Since then, innovations such as sheet-metal bodies and air-cooled, quick-changing barrels have made machine guns lighter and more reliable and quick-firing, but they still operate under the same principles as in the days of Hiram Maxim.

Most machine guns employ the gas generated by the explosion of the cartridge to drive the mechanism that introduces the new round in the chamber. The machine gun thus requires no outside source of power, instead using the energy released by the burning propellant in a cartridge to feed, load, lock, and fire each round and to extract and eject the empty cartridge case. This automatic operation may be accomplished by any of three ways: blowback, recoil, and gas operation.

In simple blowback operation, the empty cartridge case is hurled backward by the explosion of the cartridge and thereby pushes back the bolt, or breechblock, which in turn compresses a spring and is returned to the firing position upon that springs recoil. The basic problem involved in blowback is to control the rearward motion of the bolt so that the guns cycle of operation (i.e., loading, firing, and ejection) takes place correctly. In recoil operation, the bolt is locked to the barrel immediately after a round is fired; both the bolt and barrel recoil, but the barrel is then returned forward by its own spring while the bolt is held to the rear by the locking mechanism until a fresh round has fallen into place in the opened breech.

More common than either of these two methods is gas operation. In this method, the energy required to operate the gun is obtained from the pressure of gas tapped off from the barrel after each cartridge explodes. In a typical gas-operated machine gun, an opening or port is provided in the side of the barrel at a point somewhere between the breech and the muzzle. When the bullet has passed this opening, some of the high-pressure gases behind it are tapped off through the hole and operate a piston or some similar device for converting the pressure of the powder gases to a thrust. This thrust is then used through a suitable mechanism to provide the energy necessary for performing the automatic functions required for sustained fire: loading, firing, and ejection.

Few things are more annoying than having to spend an afternoon at the laundromat doing your laundry for the week. Not everyone has enough space to accommodate both a washer and a dryer. Thankfully, washer and dryer combos, such as the LG WM3488HW, allow you to make quick work of your laundry from the comfort of your home, without taking up the space required by separate units.

LGs compact combo washer and dryer is a perfect fit for an apartment or small home. The 2.3-cubic-foot model has an array of LG technology to improve both washing and drying cycles. That includes ventless drying, so you dont need to worry about where to position the model, and a clean cycle that you can use after several loads to sterilize the inside of the washer drum (something thats especially useful for these combo units).

The LG WM3488HW also includes six different washing motions to make sure even larger loads are thoroughly cleaned. The model doesnt skimp on treatment options, either, with dispensers for pre-wash liquids, bleach, and fabric softener. Its also designed for quiet operation and automatic cycle optimization based on the load. Washing programs include the traditional options, plus choices like baby wear, sportswear, speed wash, and several other options.

Washers can come with a lot of great smart features these days, and combo models are no exception. We particularly like the many options of this Blomberg model, which allow you to customize your washing and drying cycle exactly how you need to a useful option for starting your laundry in the morning and coming back after work just in time to have your clothes ready to hang and fold.

The 1.95-cubic-foot combo includes 16 different wash programs, including hand-wash, baby clothes wash, jogging wear wash, a wash and wear setting for easy results, and much more. The Blomberg WMD24400 also has intelligent temperature control to make sure the temperature is always where it needs to be for a specific load of laundry. The delay start option will let you choose exactly when the cycles begin, so you can get the timing just right with a little experience. All of this is controlled with a basic dial and a useful digital display.

The spacious 2.8-cubic-foot drum in this model is only one of the many benefits LG brings to the table with its latest work. The LCD display and SmartThinQ compatibility are welcome features, since few combo models are this smart. You can monitor and control the model from your phone, get notifications about what cycle its in, and even track how much water and electricity youre using. The auto dose feature will detect soil levels in your laundry and dispense however much detergent it thinks is necessary for a full cleaning (you also get alerts for when its time to fill up detergent again).

If you prefer more control over your laundry, you can choose from 17 different washing programs and six drying programs (including outdoor, perm press, and delicates). We also really like the TurboWash design that helps power through larger loads in less time, saving up to 20 minutes when you fill the dryer. Its also compatible with LGs Side Kick, which is a mini pedestal that also functions as a tiny extra washer thats great for washing one set of dirty clothes or tackling smaller loads while the big washer does its work.

This energy-efficient machine may be small, but dont let its size fool you. Its loaded with cool tech and smart engineering. This unit has one-button convertible venting/condensing options, meaning you can easily convert the dryer from vented to ventless. Theres a winterize option for RV users, while dual fans make the machine dry faster, and a quiet mode makes the dryer operate at less than 60 decibels.

In addition to its intelligent engineering, the Deco DC 4400 also thrives at cleaning and drying clothes with features like an automatic water level sensor, delay start time, a sensor dry feature, automatic heat and dry levels, a 12-minute hot-dry refresh cycle, and a wrinkle guard feature.

When you go to unload the machine, the 180-degree door swing and angled door handle reduce back strain. The Deco DC 4400 is also easy to install, has built-in diagnostics, and can be portable. It feels like the only things this machine cant do are fold your clothes and put them away for you.

Although this Magic Chef all-in-one machine has a smaller capacity (2.7 cubic feet), it can handle an exceptionally large amount of laundry. The washers maximum capacity is 26.4 pounds, and the dryers max capacity is 17.6 pounds.

This affordable washer dryer combo boasts a lot of features, too. It has a delay start time feature (up to 24 hours), de-wrinkle options, and an LED display. With 16 total wash cycles, you can properly care for virtually all of your clothing, from your delicate items to jeans to dress shirts. Theres even a tub clean cycle to keep the Magic Chef clean and mildew-free.

A washer dryer combo is a single unit that both washes and dries clothes in the same machine. An all-in-one washer dryer combo looks a lot like a standard washing machine, except when you place dirty clothes in the machine, they come out clean and dry without the need for you to transfer the clothes from the washer to the dryer.

Laundry centers are sometimes considered a type of combo machine they look a lot like stackable units, but theyre connected as one unit with a washer on the bottom and a dryer on top. Although a laundry center performs both functions in one machine, theyre different from all-in-one combo machines because you still have to transfer the clothes from the washer portion of the machine to the dryer portion.

If the washer dryer combo uses a condensing ventless dryer, once the machine washes the clothes and they cool down, the air inside the chamber is heated, and the spinning drum produces condensation. This condensation is drained out of the unit through a drainage tube. Then, the process happens again, and more hot air and tumbling cause more condensation until the clothes dry. To learn more about how ventless dryers work, check out our guide on how different types of dryers work.

Yes. If you purchase a reliable machine, your washer dryer combo unit will wash and dry your clothes, but you should not expect it to perform exactly like a separate washer and dryer. This is an entirely different way of doing laundry, and an all-in-one combo machine is typically not going to do your laundry as fast as a separate washer and dryer.

Oftentimes, washer dryer combos are ideal for people with limited space or for those who want to avoid the laundromat. If you have a large laundry room in your home, youd likely opt for a separate washer and dryer over a combo all-in-one washer dryer.

It depends. If you have limited space, these machines can be huge space savers. An all-in-one combo machine also makes it so you can set it and forget it. Because the machine both washes and dries in one fell swoop, you wont have a moldy load of laundry waiting for you if you leave the laundry sitting in the machine (like you would if you left a load of laundry sitting in the washer too long).

Washer dryer combos are generally energy-efficient. The front-load washer uses little water, while condenser dryers are also considered energy-efficient (although drying typically does take longer in a combo machine).

Washer dryer combos are smaller than separate machines. Their capacities are often around 2 to 3 cubic feet. You can, however, find a larger capacity machine (for instance, the Kenmore Elite 41002 is 4.5 cubic feet), but you typically wont find the mega capacities that you can find with standalone washers and dryers.

Yes and no. You wont be able to clean a large load of laundry in a compact machine thats 2.3 cubic feet or less. You can fit a small basket of laundry in a compact machine (probably about two or three days of clothing), but you wont be able to fit a large comforter or a large, full load of laundry.

It depends on the specific unit and the amount of clothes youre cleaning. However, generally speaking, the wash cycle can take anywhere from 25 to 90 minutes. The drying times take longer (typically anywhere from 60 minutes to as long as 4 hours). Washer dryer combo machines typically take longer to dry your clothing than standalone ventless dryers (probably around double the time).

Getting the laundry setup you need is important, but you also have to consider how to stay within your budget. Youll also want to think about your laundry habits, and if youd be open to changing your typical schedule for something that would better suit a washer dryer combo. If you usually do all your laundry in one day or wait to do laundry until your hamper is overflowing, it could be challenging to tackle the entire load with your washer dryer combo.

If you have the space for it, a full-size laundry center is a good investment because youll have virtually no limit to load sizes. Inversely, if youre the kind of person who routinely forgets to take your laundry out after a wash load and then has to re-wash the clothing to get rid of gross smells or mold, then you may benefit from a washer dryer combo.

Be sure to consider the combo machines laundry capacity. If your unit consistently is too small for your regular laundry loads or cant fit your blankets, curtains, or towels, you may find yourself shopping for another laundry unit in the near future. Youll also need to decide where you want your laundry machine to be located and make sure there are compatible electric plugs in place.

my dryer is making a thump noise! heres why | renah appliance

Whats that strange noise coming from your laundry room? Its your dryer making a thumping noise or squealing noise. What should you do? Here are the most common causes of dryer noises and possible solutions:

Before you rule the problem as a dryer repair issue, be sure to check for twisted or balled up clothing. Rearrange your load to ensure that the clothing can turn freely in the drum. If the noise continues, there might have an issue with the dryer.

1.Flattened Roller: Dryers that have sat idle might have their rollers slightly flattened in the resting position. The thumping noise could be caused by the flat spot as the drum rotates. If the flat area isnt too severe, then allow the dryer to run so the rollers take back their original shape. If this doesnt resolve the problem, contact a local dryer repair company to replace the rollers.

2.Worn Rollers: When a dryer is making loud squealing sound or thumping noise, the most common cause is worn down rollers. The rollers are designed to follow along the drum of the dryer as it spins. As the rollers wear down, the connection between the drum and rollers is compromised. Without the rollers gliding along the drum, you get the squealing or thumping sound as the drum rotates. Contact a local dryer repair professional to diagnose & replace your dryer rollers.

3.Damaged Belt: If the rollers dont appear to be worn, then the problem might be a frayed or damaged belt. Most technicians will replace the belt and rollers at the same time to ensure your dryer doesnt breakdown shortly after the repair. Part manufacturers sell dryer repair kits that typically include the rollers, idler pulley, and dryer belt. Manufacturers recommend replacing these items all at the same time.

If your applianceis making a thumping or squealing noise, contact a technician for an accurate diagnosis. A trained technician will be able to thoroughly inspect the dryer to determine the exact cause.

how clothes dryers work | howstuffworks

A clothes dryer can be found in just about every house in the United States, and millions more of them are manufactured each year. They are very reliable, and very cheap to build. You'll be surprised at how simple this common machine is. Clothes dryers have:

In this edition of How Stuff Works, we'll take apart a clothes dryer and explore how each system works. We'll start by following the air through the machine, then see how the tumbler and fan turn, and finally we'll look at the controls.

Let's follow the path of the air through the dryer. The air is sucked into the dryer through openings in the outside of the machine. One fan drives all of the air through the dryer, but the fan is actually the last step in the process.

This is a standard nichrome-wire heating element, just like the heating element in a toaster (see How Toasters Work for details on nichrome wire). This heating element consumes lots of power -- 4,000 to 6,000 watts on most dryers.

The fan is a centrifugal type of device -- as it spins, it flings the air to the outside, sucking air from the center and forcing it out the duct at the back of the dryer. In the next section we'll see what makes the tumbler spin.

If you open up a dryer, one surprising thing is the lack of any gears on the tumbler. It turns out that the tumbler is one giant gear (or actually a pulley), and the motor drives a tiny pulley. Because of the ratio between the huge tumbler diameter and the tiny motor pulley diameter, no other gears are needed!

A motor drives the small silver pulley that is visible beneath the black pulley in the picture above. The belt loops through the silver pulley, through the black pulley and then around the tumbler. The black pulley provides tension -- when the belt is hooked up, the pulley is drawn off center, and the spring tries to pull it back. This gives the belt its tension.

Each of the four contacts has a bend in it, and each bend is located at a different height inside the box. Starting with the bottom left contact, the heights increase in a counterclockwise manner; the bottom left contact is the lowest, the top left contact is the highest. A different cam engages each of these contacts. In the pictures below, you can see the four cam layers; each of these layers corresponds in height to one of the contacts.

The cycle switch determines how long the elements stay on. In conjunction with the heat setting buttons, it also controls which heating elements are on at a given time. If none of the heating elements are on, only cool air blows through the clothes; if one is on, the air is warm; and if both are on, the air is hot.

If you press any of the top four buttons, they stay depressed. If you then press a different button, the first one pops up, and the new button stays pressed in. A really neat set of plates that work like the tumblers in a lock make this feature possible, and also control which heating elements are engaged.

Inside the switch are a set of four contacts. Depending on which button is pressed in, the plates open or close various combinations of the contacts. The following set of pictures illustrates how pressing the buttons causes the plates to line up in different ways, raising or lowering the bars that make the contacts.

The dryer also has a couple of safety features that help to prevent overheating. There are two temperature shut-off switches. When these switches reach certain preset temperatures, they break contact, which shuts the dryer off. The first switch is located near the lint screen.

The picture above shows the front of the dryer, with the front panel partially removed. The first temperature sensor is on the right. And to the left, you can see a set of six holes in the outer edge of the tumbler. These holes are only there to blow hot air on the sensor every time they go by. If the temperature in the tumbler gets too hot, this sensor cuts the power, shutting the dryer off.

But what happens if the belt breaks and the holes don't happen to be in front of the temperature sensor? Or if the fan gets clogged and no air is coming out of the tumbler? This is where the second temperature switch comes in.

The second sensor is located close to the heating elements. If airflow is shut off for any reason, the air near this sensor will quickly heat up to the temperature that triggers this sensor, and the sensor will shut off power.

Having a really solid, luxurious set of towels can make your bath feel like a spa getaway without leaving the house. But bath towels can be pretty gnarly breeding grounds for bacteria if you dont wash them often enough (its recommended to throw them in the machine every 2-3 uses, which, if were being real, is probably more often than youre doing now). So how can you make sure that your body is not only dry, but actually clean post-shower?

Ozwinds Body Dryer is a spin on the luxe shower dryers often found in Korean spas, now available in a convenient, at-home design. The way it works is actually surprisingly simple and effective: a blast of filtered air wraps around your whole body, leaving you dry and refreshed, no towels necessary. It boasts additional cleaning capabilities than just air-drying alone, by adding antibacterial disinfecting features to help maintain skin health.

While it may seem like something youd find in a fancy resort or fitness center rather than in a home bathroom, and the price certainly reflects this, you wont be disappointed by all the features jam-packed into this single, do-it-all device. Sleek, modern, and with germ-killing properties, Ozwinds Body Dryer gives you a high-tech clean you never knew you needed. For an easy upgrade to your personal hygiene heres what you need to know.

Instead of manually toweling off, this dryer provides a refreshing blast of temperature-controlled air. The ergonomic V nozzle design creates a tornado wind effect that drys off your whole body with a pretty impressive reach, from the soles of your feet, to your upper torso. Shaped similarly to a bathroom scale, just step on the foothold and in seconds, all the excess moisture is wicked away.

Ozwinds Body Dryer provides fresh air through a unique six-level dustless filter, which includes a pre-filter, urethane filter, an a certified HEPA filter layer thats found in all the best air purifiers. The high-powered fan is also composed of a dehumidifying, anion generator that produces 1.4 million negative ions, giving you clean air, fast. Negative ions are often praised for their anti-allergen and air-purifying effects (a waterfall gives off negative ions, for example.)

The touch LED display is easy and comfortable to use. You can also adjust the wind speed and temperatures based on your preference, but there are two preset Natural and Warm air settings, which give you 400W to 1,000W of drying power respectively. Auto mode allows the dryer to run continuously for up to 180 seconds without having to fiddle with a complicated remote, or worry about it not shutting down properly.

Lightweight and portable, the dryer supports up to 330 lbs despite its compact size. Once you have the settings down, you can get the airflow started moments after you step onto the foothold. A quicker way to dry off, you wont have any more wet towels piling up on your bathroom floor.

Ozwind says youll get premium disinfecting power with this dryers infrared LED light technology. So it can stand up to bacteria that linger on the soles of your feet, but can it provide any protection against the coronavirus? When it comes to using UV light including visible infrared light against the coronavirus, the FDA says UV light can work to destroy the outer protein coating of the virus, which then knocks out the virus effectiveness.

But it depends on the dose, type of UV rays, and overall exposure, so it might not be a 100 percent perfect protection method. That being said, studies have shown that infrared light exposure can potentially help with respiratory issues, and the sterilization properties of this dryers infrared lights are still sound. Though the light range is fairly limited to your feet, its still a big bonus to have if you care about your foot health.

When it comes to built-in design, the 99.9% antibacterial foothold also increases overall freshness, so you can stay germ-free. Its a must-have if you have sensitive skin, or if youre looking to prevent conditions like athletes foot or eczema from popping up.

If youre looking for a body dryer in the under-$500 price range, you might consider the Ozwind Ruby, which includes the same wind power, with just a few less smart features. When comparing the two models, we did prefer the ease-of-use of the regular Ozwinds LED touchscreen, and liked that it was Bluetooth-enabled and can be paired to the health-related Ozwind app.

Ozwinds Body Dryer, unlike other full-body dryers such as Viatek, allows you dry off fast and check your weight simultaneously. This dryer is Bluetooth-enabled, allowing you to pair it with the Ozwind app, essentially pulling double-duty as a functioning smart scale. With the auto weight detection sensor, it connects to the app where you can check your history with updated weight, BMI, body fat, and muscle mass.

Since its so lightweight, we like that you have the ability to move it around anywhere, not just your bathroom. Its great for patios and decks too if you have an outdoor pool and want everyone to dry off before they step back in the house.

The fan speeds are strong enough to not just over your entire body, but also help purify the air in smaller spaces, since its already packed with a multi-layered filter and anion generator. Its a decent substitute if you dont want to get an extra air purifier or dehumidifier for your bathroom (although if you have severe allergy symptoms, we do recommend you look for an air purifier specifically for allergies).

If youre worried about energy consumption, this body dryer is actually a more eco-friendly way of drying off. Eliminating the need for towel usage means less laundry for you, and an overall decrease in water waste and energy usage.

Ozwinds Body Dryer is the best possible combination of convenience and luxury, with a sanitizing boost that alone makes it worth adding to your home bathroom. After all, theres no such thing as being too clean.
