Vermeer expands its electric-powered recycling product line with the addition of the new TR5300EM trommel screen. This new trommel screen is powered by an industrial-duty, fan-cooled 60-hp (44.7-kW) electric motor, and delivers a drum speed of 0-24 revolutions per minute to handle multiple material types, including compost, topsoil and wood biomass. The quiet operating TR5300EM also features a low hopper infeed with a capacity of 5.5-yd3 (4.2 m3) and includes new service and operating enhancements. The Vermeer TR5300EM is an excellent addition to recycling and organic material processing companies looking to help reduce exhaust emissions, noise levels and maintenance.

According to Jay Van Roekel, product manager for Vermeer Recycling and Forestry products, the demand for electric equipment to process organic material is growing, and the TR5300EM complements the line of electric recycling and processing equipment Vermeer produces. Many of our horizontal and tub grinders are available with electric motors, as well as the TR626EM trommel screen, he explained. The TR5300EM is a more compact unit than the TR626EM, making it an excellent option for processing facilities located in urban environments and companies looking to reduce emissions and maintenance.

The hydraulically driven drum on the TR5300EM is 15-ft (4.6 m) long and 5-ft (1.6 m) in diameter to optimize material processing and deliver a high-quality end product. Quick-change screens and a quick-change drum help make it convenient and quick to perform sizing adjustments. The TR5300EM also features several access doors to help with servicing and a set of dual-hinged doors on both sides of the machine for full access to the drum at ground level.

The TR5300EM trommel screen overs and fines conveyors are adjustable to help with dust control and allow for precise placement of material. The unit is also equipped with auto overs flaps to help contain material and reduce spillage.

Vermeer also designed this electric trommel screen for ease of maneuverability and transport. A lot of electric recycling processing machinery in the market is stationary, explained Van Roekel. However, the ability to move a machine can help make servicing and cleaning more efficient. The TR5300EM is built on a single-axle frame, making it possible to transport it to another jobsite or move it into storage when its not in use, as well as making it convenient for a person performing maintenance or cleaning up material around the unit.

The TR5300EM can be equipped with several optional accessories, including a grizzly screen to sort out oversized material and a magnetic head pulley for removing unwanted metal. It can also be outfitted with an auger drum and a hopper extension.

Many designers and mill operators believe that the benefits of simplicity and the ability to handle throughputs in excess of 5 000 tph of solids make trommels the preferred equipment for this application. Multotec has been supplying trommel screens since 1982. Multotec has the process capability to size SAG mill trommels to suit each customers unique requirements, and supplies this equipment to both mill OEMs and mines in diameters of up to 5.5 m.

Considering the size and complexity of large SAG mill trommel frames, the latest Finite Element Analysis techniques are used to reduce fatigue stresses and ensure structural integrity. The stresses considered are those induced by deformation of the support trunnion, the live load as well as the mass of the trommel screen.All the frame surfaces that are exposed to the milled product are covered with a wear resistant material, with rubber being the most common option.

While polyurethane screen media is often specified for ball mill trommels, Multotec has developed a range of compression moulded rubber compounds that have achieved excellent results in high wear SAG mill duties.

Multotec is able to offer rubber screen media that can operate successfully at elevated temperatures, these screen panels are also inert to hydrolysis caused by bacteria present in process water. The careful consideration of the working depth of screen panels is essential for abrasive ores. The design of the internal steel frame caters for both lump size and trommel load.

Various configurations of weir bars and scrolls are used to increase retention time and regulate the flow of solids through the trommel screen. Multotec has supplied a number of trommel screens for 38 to 40 SAG mills that required 500 to 600 mm-high weir bars to create sufficient retention time.

Vermeer, Pella, Iowa, has introduced the new TR6400 model to its trommel screen product line. Capable of separating up to 180 cubic yards of material per hour, the TR6400 is designed for topsoil, compost and woody biomass applications. It features a powerful 100-horsepower Duetz 3.6L Tier 4 Final (Stage IV) engine, a 6.5-foot diameter screen drum, a low hopper infeed with a capacity of 6.5 cubic yards and various service and operating enhancements.

The TR6400 trommel screen builds off the success of our recently introduced TR5300 model, says Jeff Bradley, product manager for recycling and forestry equipment at Vermeer. Its compact design allows for ease of transportation and maintenance. With a large drum diameter, hopper capacity and increased horsepower, teams will be able to produce large volumes of finished material with the TR6400 day in, day out.

The drum of the TR6400 is designed for quick exchange with a side door that gives complete access to the drum body from the ground. In addition, the units quick-change screen, with the ability to tension it around the drum to add rigidity, can accommodate smaller gauge wire to aid with overall production even when running wet materials.

To further enhance the performance of the TR6400 trommel screen, the Vermeer ACS control system gives operators the flexibility to run the machine with the DP10 display mounted on the control panel or a handheld transceiver remote. From either control unit, the operator can adjust conveyor heights and drum speeds depending on incoming material and job site conditions.

The Recycling Alliance of North Alabama (RANA), an opt-in monthly curbside recycling service, began phase four cart deliveries this week for residents who signed up for the program from Oct. 6, 2019, through Jan. 16. According to RANA, deliveries for this phase will last a few weeks since there was a high number of signups.

We are thrilled that so many residents continue to sign up for the program and we are seeing huge successes in the first six months," says Doc Holladay, executive director of the Solid Waste Disposal Authority (SWDA). "In phase four, approximately 3,000 residents signed up, which shows positive momentum for our program and the direction we are headed.

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), Silver Spring, Maryland, commends the U.S. House of Representatives for holding a hearing on Strengthening Community Recycling Programs: Challenges and Opportunities.

The Feb. 5 hearing, held by the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies, was a timely and necessary exploration of the current state of recycling in the nation and what role the federal government can play in helping communities and citizens adapt to changing markets, SWANA says in a news release.

Witnesses called to speak at the event included Peter Wright, the assistant administrator for the Office of Land and Emergency Management for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); Daniel Corona, mayor of West Wendover, Nevada; Michael Gajewski, the managing director of Closed Loop Partners; Elizabeth Biser, vice president of public affairs for The Recycling Partnership; and Adam Ortiz, the director of the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection in Maryland. Both Biser and Ortiz are SWANA members, and Wright spoke at several SWANA events in 2019, the association says.

We are pleased that Congress is exploring a greater federal role to help strengthen local recycling programs, says David Biderman, SWANA executive director and CEO. While EPA did a heroic job convening a diverse group of stakeholders over the past year to develop the National Framework for Advancing the U.S. Recycling System, which was released in November 2019, further federal assistance and coordination is needed.

As the House seeks options for supporting community recycling programs, SWANA urges all representatives to pass the Save Our Seas 2.0 Act, which has been approved by the Senate on a bipartisan vote. This legislation, SWANA says, establishes a postconsumer materials management infrastructure grant program and trash-free water grants that will help local waste management authorities to make improvements and meet waste management standards at this critical time.

In addition to supporting the Save Our Seas 2.0 Act, SWANA continues to advocate for other bills that provide valuable funding for community recycling: H.R. 5115, the Realizing the Economic Opportunities and Values of Expanding Recycling (RECOVER) Act, and S. 2941, the Recycling Enhancements to Collection and Yield through Consumer Learning and Education (RECYCLE) Act. The bills were introduced in the House and Senate in November 2019.

Austin Resource Recovery (ARR), Austin, Texas, has received a $45,000 grant from the Foam Recycling Coalition (FRC), Falls Church, Virginia. The grant will increase the citys capacity to manage and process more postconsumer polystyrene (PS), including foodservice packaging and protective packaging for recycling, according to an FRC news release.

Austins Recycle & Reuse Drop-Off Center (RRDOC) currently serves single-family residents and multifamily complexes. Most services are at no cost, but some services have a fee, including services offered to businesses, which are required to provide access to recycling under Austins Universal Recycling ordinance. With the ordinance in place, the RRDOC saw a large increase in the amount of foam collected and processed at its facilityan increase of nearly 8,000 pounds per month.

We are excited to see more material coming to our facility. With such an increase in the volume of foam, we were struggling to keep up, says Andy Dawson, assistant division manager. With this grant from the Foam Recycling Coalition, we will purchase a second densifier to help supplement our current equipment and allow us to handle a greater volume of foam coming from businesses.

To communicate with residents about this program, ARR has taken the initiative to provide outreach material to nearly all 195,000 residential customers in Austin. The city will continue to inform residents and businesses through social media sites and monthly utility bill inserts to relay new information about their recycling program.

We like to work with forward-thinking organizations, like the city of Austins Austin Resource Recovery department, to expand their recycling programs, says Natha Dempsey, president of the Foodservice Packaging Institute, which houses the coalition. Everyone benefits when more materials are recycled in the communities they serve, instead of going to landfills.

This location will also provide an augmented reality (AR) service tool that connects dealer service technicians in the field to remotely based master technicians. Both parties can collaborate in real-time to diagnose and repair machines.

The company will use AR-enabled tablets to allow visitors to experience the 355 MSR prototype machine, and the next generation of WAVES (wide-angle visual enhancement system) will be installed on a Link-Belt 210 X4 in the hall as well.

Multotec is well positioned to develop screen media to face these challenges in either polyurethane, rubber, steel, ceramics or combinations of these. The company is continuously developing screen media to suit specific applications. No two applications are the same and, therefore, each wear solution is unique, explains Multotec screening product manager Anthony Yell.

The company also has the added advantage of being able to supply polyurethane panels for smaller feed sizes where the main wear criteria are sliding abrasion and wear impact on rubber panels. We design and manufacture rubber and polyurethane panels in-house, Yell points out.

He explains that the company has had trommel screens running for over ten years that are still operational and that customers can return trommel screens for refurbishment as part of their preventive maintenance.

The rubber lining is stripped off the steel structure, visually inspected for wear and then nondestructive testing is carried out to determine the integrity of the trommel structure. If it is still within specification, it can be shot-blasted and re-rubber-lined, whereupon it will be good to go for many more years, he adds.

The time taken to refurbish the trommel screens is dependent on the work required. If, after the rubber lining is stripped off, the magnetic particle inspection testing is completed and the frame is in good condition, the unit will be relined with rubber and returned in about four weeks; however, if there is damage to the trommel steel structure, refurbishment could take up to ten weeks.

We are presently in an economic downturn; however, there has been a steady increase in the demand for trommel screens and we expect the trend to continue owing to the growing number of mines worldwide, recounts Yell.

Mill and scrubber trommels are also used in scrubber product sizing in diamond mining and in the removal of organic material in mineral sands; these trommels do not require their own drive system or foundation; therefore, if compared to vibrating screens in these applications, they are a very cost-effective solution.
