Working in the mining industry can be a dangerous place if you dont know what youre doing. Regular training is essential and understanding the machines youre working near or operating plays an important role in all aspects of the industry.

Each type of mining equipment comes with its own set of mining activities. The most common types of mining equipment vary depending whether the work is being carried out above or below ground or mining for gold, metals, coal or crude oil. From drilling machines to excavators, crushing and grinding equipment the mining industry comes complete with all the right tools. New to the job and want to find out what it all means? Heres a few of the industrys most common types of equipment and why theyre important for the job.

Probably one of the most common pieces of mining equipment, drills are an important part of the underground mining operation. Underground mining is carried out when rocks or minerals are located at a fair distance beneath the ground. But then they need to be brought to the surface. Underground specialized mining equipment such as trucks, loaders, diggers etc. are used to excavate the material and are normally hauled to the surface with skips or lifts for further processing. Drilling is normally required to place explosive charges to liberate the minerals from the overburden material. Underground mining techniques have progressed significantly over the past years, including using remote controlled machinery.

Drills assist in creating holes descending underground. If miners are required to work underground, drills can also be used in ensuring the holes are large enough to serve as a portal for miners to enter. Directional drilling is also a type of mining technology where miners will use the tools and certain methods to drill wells.

Blasting tools are an essential part of the mining industry and are used to break down and fracture materials (usually rocks) by use of a calculated amount of explosive to liberate the sought-after product from the waste material. Blasting is also used to remove pockets of unwanted material that are preventing mining machines and personnel to get to the seam containing the materials of interest. Unmanned drill rigs will drill holes at pre-determined depths and positions on a blast face to ensure that a particular size fraction is achieved and that little of the overburden is liberated with the blasting to reduce material handling costs. Once this process has been completed, an excavator is used to recover the blasted rocks and other debris that has been dislodged during the blasting. The material is then conveyed to a central conveying system which will take it directly to the surface or via a skip and hoist system.

For above ground mining, earth movers are utilised regularly to carry loose soil and earth from one location to another. Earth movers play an important role in the mining industry because the equipment is specifically designed to work on large earth-moving and mining projects for a faster and more practical process. Used for digging, pushing and transporting the earth, they require the specialised skills of an operator.

Earth movers are heavy mining equipment that the industry would struggle to survive without and work hand in hand with bulldozers. Earth movers are normally used for removing overburden or waste material, which enables the excavators to remove the material or mineral of interest. Bulldozers are used to move this overburden material around to create a working surface for other equipment such as haul trucks and excavators.

As its name suggests, crushing equipment is used to crush rock and stone. Designed to achieve maximum productivity and high reduction rate, mining crushing equipment can come in a variety of different types for a range of jobs.

Crushing equipment is specially configured to break down the hard rock matter or gravel to a manageable size for transportation or conveying. They are valuable pieces of equipment in the industry because they reduce the costs associated with handling of larger sized material and also ensure efficient liberation of elements of interest in downstream processing of the material. In an opencast or strip mining operation, the run of mine (ROM) material is normally transported to the primary crusher by haul trucks, and in underground mining operations it is conveyed to the primary crusher. Crushing equipment is important to the mining process because it reduces the use of precious excavated resources and eliminates the amount of material on site.

Once the excavator transporter brings the raw material to the crusher for processing, the feeding device feeds the material into the crusher and in return the material is screened and all oversized material is recirculated back to the crusher to ensure correct size fraction is obtained. This weighbelt feeding equipment, usually referred to as Weighfeeders, conveys and controls the feedrate into the crusher to improve crusher efficiency.

Feeding and conveying equipment are necessary to the mining industry to move and control material flow within a mining and processing operation to facilitate efficient operation of equipment and determine operating rates and yields. In some instances secondary crushing is required prior to processing of the material. Once the material is at the correct size, fraction processing can occur which could include, milling, flotation, leaching etc.

Belt scale systems let you monitor production output and inventory, or regulate product loadout, while providing vital information for the effective management and efficient operation of your business. There are elemental crossbelt analyzers that provide real-time quality analysis of critical process streams to facilitate sorting, blending and out-of-seam dilution control. While materials are on the troughed belt conveyor, an automatic sampling system (which could be single or multi-stage) can take a representative sample directly from the moving material stream. The IGR 10K Placer Gold Mining Plant is an A-La-Carte = Fully Customized Alluvial Mining Equipment. As alluvial and eluvial deposits vary greatly in feed size distribution and clay content, an alluvial/eluvial plant needs the capacity to process an extreme range of conditions. The IGR 10K A-La-Carte Placer Gold Mining plant will have the versatility to process a broad spectrum of conditions from clean gravel to laterite and saprolite clays. Alluvial Channel/Gravel conditions may involve 20% to 90% of the solids feed passing 2mm- and continuing to the concentrators. Clays may have 90% passing 2mm- and continuing to the concentrators. This plant will work in conditions of both gravel and clay. Plant throughput and efficiency will vary with the condition of the material.

The A-La-Carte structure of the plant will allow the client to purchase only the components they need. The modular design will allow the purchaser or operator to add or remove components without obsoleting that which they already have and without requiring engineering design.

An operator may choose to start with or without the scrubber. This decision will be made based on knowledge of the clay content and capital investment. As the user gains experience they may choose to add the scrubber or remove it from their system; this is A-La-Carte the client can add or subtract components at will without re-design. Additionally, the user may desire to add options such as DMS or Jigs for diamonds and/or cyclones for dewatering/de-sliming.

The plant can be fed by excavator/loader or land dredge. Our plant including the scrubber is ideal to be fed by a loader/excavator. When feeding by a land dredge the user may opt to leave the scrubber out of the system. The land dredge will do a decent job of dispersing the clay though not perfect. The land dredge also delivers slurry at maybe 15% solids by weight. This is considered very thin slurry for efficient scrubbing. Operators in some regions insist on scrubbing the dredge discharge. Field testing will provide the best information on your material.

An operator will feed material onto the grizzly. A water monitor fluidizes/mobilizes the material allowing it to pass through the grizzly where it continues to either a scrubber or vibrating screen. It is the fluidizing action of the monitor that controls the feed rate of solids into the system. Clean gravels will mobilize easily with the monitor and provide the maximum flow rate of solids. Clay will require more water to mobilize the material allowing it to pass through the grizzly. A wider grizzly allows larger clay balls to pass. This keeps the solids to water ratio high which leads to maximum efficiency in the scrubber and maximum solids throughput of the plant.

This wash plant scrubber works best at 50% solids. A scrubber uses large rock as the grinding media. A scrubber will lift the solids to 1 oclock and drop the solids back to 7 oclock causing an energy intensive lifting and dropping action. It is the attrition of the rock on rock action that acts to disperse the clay. Clay processing is based on energy input and retention time inside of the scrubber. To scrub better, the operator can increase the retention time or literally add large rocks to the scrubber.

After the scrubber the material passes to a double deck vibrating screen. Typically the upper deck cuts at 12mm and the lower deck cuts at 2mm. These can be specified by the customer. The 2mm- passes to a slurry transfer pump and on to the concentrators. The 2 to 12 mm middling is recombined with 12mm oversize and pass to the oversize stacking conveyor.

A max of 90 tph of solids can be fed to each battery without harm to the system. A minimum of 6 tph of solids is recommended to each battery. The intent is to always use 6 concentrators regardless of the feed rate. The slurry water capacity of 700 gpm +/-10% is intended to remain constant regardless of the solids feed rated. No control system is required for the slurry water.

A Carousel Distributor is used to distribute the slurry from the head tank to the 6 active concentrators. The distributor also blocks the flow to the 7th concentrator allowing the operator to rinse the rich concentrate. An operator will manually rotate the distributor and operate the valves on each concentrator.

Tails are piped to a common tails launder and with an 8 flanged outlet. The launder is designed for gravity discharge. (Pumping the tails requires modification to the depth of the launder to avoid cavitation.)

All equipment is mounted on a single skid designed to fit in a 20 container. The skid includes a roof structure with corrugate roofing. The container will arrive with the majority of the assembly already complete. Some site assembly will be required. This includes erection of the portions too tall to fit in the container and installation of the roof panels.

The screen fractions can be processed separately if the customer desires. This would require an additional conveyor. Also, one may choose alternate screen apertures: a top deck at 30mm where the 2mm to 30mm fraction is passed to a DMS or jig for diamonds is an option. In this case only the 30mm+ would pass to the tails conveyor.

Gold concentrators are batch machines. This means you must occasionally divert the feed to rinse the rich concentrate. In a system with only 1 concentrator, you either by-pass to tails or to a tank/slurry pump that recirculates the slurry back to a head tank. A system having 2 concentrators would allow to you to always feed 1 out of the 2. This is inefficient. A system feeding 2 concentrators while rinsing a third, becomes financially viable when using the economical i350. A battery feeding 6 while rinsing the 7th is very efficient and cost effective. The iCON Rotary Distributor allows easy distribution of the slurry and sequential rinsing without complicated industrial valves and/or controls. The distributor is hand operated.

Geita, one of AngloGold Ashantis flagship mines, is located in north-western Tanzania, in the Lake Victoria goldfields of Mwanza region, about 120km from Mwanza and 4km west of the town of Geita. It has been in operation as a large-scale mine since the1930s.

The Geita gold deposit is mined as a multiple open-pit and underground operation (since 2016) and will continue to operate as such until the entire economic open-pit Mineral Resource is exhausted. The mine is currently serviced by a carbon-in-leach processing plant with an annual capacity of 5.1Mt.

Other notable projects at Geita were completion of the 40MW power plant and the purchase of underground mining plant and equipment. The power plant was commissioned in August and is currently in full operation, providing reliable, low-cost power to the mining operations.

The purchase of the underground mining plant and equipment is in line with the strategy to transition to owner mining at Star & Comet, planned for the first half of 2019, with the full change over for the rest of the mines sections expected to follow in coming years.

In Tanzania, community development is one of the material issues to which we are committed. Our support at Geita was guided by the community investment procedure. In July 2017, the parliament of Tanzania amended the Mining Act 2010, and introduced section 105, which describes the procedure for mineral right holders to prepare and execute their corporate social responsibility (CSR) plans.

The positive impacts of the community-based malaria programme continue to be seen at Geita with the recording of a significantly low 0.17% incidence of malaria among employees and contractors affected in 2018. This community-based malaria control programme extends to Geita Town where around 90% of employees, contractors and families reside. The programme is based on a public-private partnership model with government authorities, NGOs and academic institutions to ensure sustainability and alignment with national priorities.

During 2018, Geita committed to facilitating the construction of 295 classrooms in the Geita district. Construction works are underway with 198 classrooms completed by year end. The new classrooms will help to provide a conducive learning environment for the students whose performances have been impacted by challenging learning conditions.

During 2018, Geita funded the construction of the Nyamalembo Health Centre at a cost of $115,000. The centre will provide host communities with access to much-needed medical treatment and care. Three dispensaries are currently under construction at the Nyakahongola, Katoro and Ikulwa villages to facilitate easy access to healthcare services in rural areas. The total cost for the project is $550,000.

The company contributed approximately $600,000 towards establishment of the Geita Town market in 2018. Construction of the market frames is underway. Upon completion, spinoffs from the market will include transportation, catering and the supply of goods and services to traders. About 5,000 employment opportunities will be created from this initiative.

In collaboration with the Geita Town council, the company has financed the construction of the Geita Town traffic roundabout. The facility was installed at the request of the local authorities to cordon off high-traffic areas and thus reduce road accidents. The total cost of the project is $45,000.

In consultation with the office of the Regional Commissioner, Geita extended support to other districts, in terms of providing building materials for health and education facilities. The company assisted in the construction of a modern operating theatre at the Chato District Hospital. Materials delivered to three districts cost some $145,000.

In 2018, Geita mine constructed a paddy storage facility at Saragulwa village, to store harvested rice, which was officially handed over to the farmers co-operative, Nyabusakama. At Kasota village, the farming co-operative also owns the sunflower oil mill being constructed and equipped by Geita mine. For the 2019 CSR plan, Geita will focus on creating a positive legacy through Geitas economic development projects. These projects aim to improve the welfare of the local farming community and to provide alternative sustainable livelihoods for host communities. The construction of a sugar factory is a priority for 2019.

For the last two decades, Geita Gold Mine (GGM) has held a very special and unique place for AngloGold Ashanti. Not only is it one of our flagship mines, but I truly believe it represents a model for responsible investment in the extractive industry sector. With the dedication of our people, who look to deliver and support the Geita community every day, and continued investment, we have been able to turn GGM into Africas preeminent gold mine.

Our aim at Geita is for the gold mining sector in Tanzania to grow in a way that translates into prosperity. We genuinely believe our role as a corporate citizen, and one of the most important African investors in Tanzania, is to help facilitate and support the countrys goals in achieving middle-income status by 2025. With hard work and dedication, as well as a partnership approach with the government, GGML can and will help contribute to Tanzanias economic development and improve the welfare of its people. GGMs success is intertwined with the success of the communities and relationship with government.

We believe Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) and AngloGold Ashanti have provided a positive model with successive administrations on how the mining sector can cooperate with the Government of Tanzania. The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) awarded GGM as the most consistent and compliant taxpayer in the country. GGM was also awarded the Best Employer of the Year Award as a 1st runner up in 2016 by the Association of Tanzania Employers, and were awarded as the most compliant employer in the mining sector by the National Social Security Fund. All of this would not be possible without a senior management team where Tanzanians comprise of 60% of the executive committee (ExCo). With their leadership, GGM has been recognized as a safety and health compliant company, recognised by the Occupational, Health and Safety (OHS) for two years in a row, most recently in 2017.

A thriving GGM, receiving its required investment, producing at its most efficient levels possible and delivering tax to the exchequer, is one of the most powerful tools to enable the country to reach its goals. As we embark on an ambitious strategy, investing several hundred million dollars at GGM to extend life of this iconic Tanzanian gold mine, we understand that in todays world you cannot simply be a mining company. In order to succeed and provide lasting change to the communities you operate in and the country that hosts you, the activities must go beyond mining. This is something that my colleagues at AngloGold Ashanti wholeheartedly advocate. This is why GGML has invested significantly in the following key areas in Geita: education, health and infrastructure. These three areas will form the backbone of our future commitment to the people of Geita and Tanzania, which parallelly underline the governments important industrialization plans.

For years GGML has been transforming lives in Tanzania, where GGMLs education-based programs have been empowering communities in the Geita area with the knowledge and skillsets to achieve their own vision and take charge of their own future. GGMLs most important endeavor to date, one which will have a significant and long-standing impact for the future, is GGMLs $7mn construction of the Nyankumubu Secondary School for girls. This terrific school, I believe, should be a model for future secondary schools across the country in terms of infrastructure, layout and facilities. Already its become an attractive destination for young girls in the Lake Zone. I am reminded of a bright young lady, Janeth G. Joseph, who went to Jordan University in Morogoro after successfully completing her high school studies at Nyankumubu. Janeth continues to visit Nyankumubu Secondary school; she also teaches there, starting an important cycle that I have no doubt will continue into the future. Of course, it will not be an easy journey and there is still a lot to be done at Nyankumubu - great facilities alone do not translate to good quality education. For that reason GGMLs focus over the next few years, working closely with local authorities, will be to improve the quality of education so that all the girls that attend our school are guaranteed future success in tertiary education.

Among the initiatives designed in partnership with the local government and host communities is a five-year plan to develop tailoring, welding, fabrication and brickmaking business through the Magogo SME Center. This center, established in 2016, will look to train and support young entrepreneurs in Geita and equip them to build skills and prepare them to start their own businesses. In that spirit of entrepreneurship, GGML has also created a space within the center that will see a group of women starting a catering service. At first the service caters for the center, but will eventually scale up to other parts of the community. This is just another example of what underpins our ultimate goal: helping build capacity and sustainable economic development for the future of Geita that goes beyond mining.

It is also great to see local farmers utilizing the skills introduced through the Geita Economic Development Plan. Farming represents an important fabric of Tanzanias society and we recognize its significant role in socioeconomic development. Thanks to the new techniques used to improve the quality and quantity of their corps and even introducing new commercially viable ones like sunflower they have taken their grandfathers profession into a completely new level and have started to develop a more sustainable agribusiness model.

Helping these communities meet their critical needs is unquestionably worthy, but empowering them to acquire the know-how and enabling them to educate their fellow citizens is a lot better and by far more compelling. Thats why nurturing skill development in the Geita area is what we aim for. Facilitating aspects of local supply chains is essential to create a successful business cycle and stimulate the economy.

Education is just one component in which we will continue to invest in the future. Infrastructure, is another. The Geita Town Water Project represents a commitment to providing access to clean and safe water to the Geita community. Water access in Geita improved from 3% in 2012 to 36% in 2016, and as a result, the water service has improved the health standards of the people and nearly all water related diseases have been eradicated. GGML will continue to create the necessary conditions so that water access steadily improves over the next 5-10 years. GGML has $53 million worth of community projects planned for the next 14 years.

Looking ahead, we are optimistic that the future is bright. As we carry out further exploration work at GGM, we look to transition from open pit to underground drilling to extend the life of the mine and realize its full potential. GGML invested $713million in Tanzania over the past five years, and we are with the help of our local stakeholders determined to invest more to ensure sustainable development of our operations. In fact, the new 3,948 MW, $43 million power plant which we invested in, and is expected to come online in 2018, is a concrete testament of our long-term commitment to the country.

Description: The Dragor 6 equipment, depending on the hardness of the floor bottom, allows an extraction average of 7 to 10 cubic meters per hour of stelled gravels with a depth of down to 10 meters.
