Indeed, data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics show that cement consumption in the country hit 6.5 million tonnes last year up from 5.9 million tonnes in 2019, driven by developers who defied Covid-19-related restrictions to build their properties.

Lafarge Group, the largest cement manufacturer in the world, is the companys largest shareholder controlling a 58.6 per cent stake with Old Mutual Life Assurance Company, Kenya Reinsurance Corporation and the NSSF being the other major shareholders.

However, National Cement has seen its market share rise to 21 per cent following the acquisition of ARM Africa Plc., the producer of Rhino Cement, which was once the third largest cement manufacturer in Kenya.

The plant is located in Athi River and produces the brand Nyumba Cement which has grabbed a sizable market share from older and more established companies to become the second biggest player with a 15.8 per cent control.

The company had for a long time held the second place with a 25 per cent control after Bamburi Cement but was dislodged by Mombasa Cement due to a financial turbulence that started in 2015 as a result of board room wars over company ownership.

kenya: mining, minerals and fuel resources

Kenya is located in Eastern Africa between Tanzania and Somalia. The total area of the country is 581,309 km2 and has a population of roughly 48 million. The countrys climate varies from tropical along the coast to arid in the interior regions. The GDP of the country was $76.07 billion in 2012.

Kenya is the economic, transport and financial of East Africa. Since 2014, Kenya has been ranked as a lower middle-income country, as its per capita GDP crossed a World Bank threshold. Previously, The World Bank and IMF restricted aid to the country previously due to rampant corruption. Kenya has a growing entrepreneurial middle class and steady growth, but its economic development has been impaired by weak governance, political instability, corruption and violent clashes between rival parties since gaining independence in 1963.

The natural resources of Kenya include oil, gas, limestone, gypsum, soda ash, diatomite, gemstones, fluorspar, zinc, wildlife, and hydropower. The country is gearing up to move from an agriculture and tourism based-economy to one that is based on mineral resources. Most of the mines and cement plants are privately owned.

Mineral resources in Kenya include gold, iron ore, talc, soda ash, some rare earth minerals, and gemstones. Gold is mostly restricted to the westernmost part of the country, while areas around Mombasa host limestone, niobium, iron ore, gemstones, and salt.

The mining and quarrying sector in Kenya accounts for less than 1 percent of gross domestic product, with the majority being contributed by the soda ash operation at Lake Magadi in south-central Kenya. In 2010, Kenyas share of the worlds soda ash production amounted to 4%. Cement, fluorspar, and petroleum refining were the other mining and mineral processing activities undertaken by the mining sector.

In 2010, Aviva Corporation Ltd. of Australia signed a joint-venture agreement with Lonmin plc of UK to explore for copper, gold, silver, and zinc in the Ndori Greenstone Belt. In the same year, Base Resources Ltd. of Australia acquired the Kwale mineral sand reserves from Vaaldiam Mining Inc. of Canada.

There are five cement producers in Kenya with a combined capacity of 5.7 Mt/yr. The countrys cement production increased to 3.71 Mt in 2010 from 3.32 Mt in 2009. The cement plant owned by Athi River Mining Ltd. (ARM) at Kaloleni has a capacity of 300,000 t/yr. The company has also started operating another plant with a capacity of 730,000 t/yr at Athi River since December 2010. Mombasa Cement produced 300,000 t of cement in 2010 compared to 250,000 t in 2009.

Cement production is set to increase as the existing plants and the newly constructed plants are likely to increase their capacity. The demand for cement in other African countries such as Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda will also have an impact on cement exports from Kenya.

The mining sector in Kenya is all set to expand to a greater level in the coming years as the recent increase in global demand for minerals has seen several Australian and other mining companies seeking permission from the Kenyan government to explore its mineral reserves.

All these developments are very promising for the future of Kenyas mining sector. It is now up to the government to sort out the internal political issues and pave the way for economic growth by strengthening its mining sector.

Kwale Mineral Sands is located in Kenya, approximately 40km south of Mombasa. The mines development is estimated to cost $298m, and construction began in 2011. The mine began production of ilmenite and rutile in December 2013, with the production of zircon commencing in February 2014. Annual production is projected to be 330,000t of ilmenite, 80,000t of rutile and 40,000t of zircon.

The project is predicted to be one of the top producers of ilmenite and rutile in the world, with production amounting to 14% of the global supply of these minerals. It is expected to generate $1bn in revenues in the mineral sands market over 13 years.

The 2016 Mining Act replaced the former 1940 mining act. The previous act contained out-of-date laws and mining data, which meant that the country had missed out on potential mineral exploration. The new legislation includes more details and provisions about the principles of land policy, public land, regulation of land use and property, environmental obligations and agreements relating to natural resources.

Mining Minister Dan Kazungu wrote a new strategy that spans over the 20 years, with the hopes that 10% of GDP will come from mining by 2030. The new strategy includes plans for up to 20 new mines and aims to have 20 more operators situated in the country over the next 15 years.

kenya - cement industry news from global cement

Kenya: A court in Nairobi has reinstated Jacob Omondi Guma as a production manager for the East African Portland Cement Company (EAPCC). It follows the companys decision to appoint Japheth Ombogo to the position, according to the Business Daily newspaper. The judge annulled the companys decision on the grounds that it was marked by irregularities and may have been malicious. The court ruled that Guma may stay in post until his three-year contract ends in September 2022 unless otherwise lawfully terminated. He was removed from the role in November 2019 after serving for just two months. The cement producer denies the allegations and says it removed him from the post due a lack of qualifications.

Kenya: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Bamburi Cement has made a donation of personal protective equipment (PPE) worth US$46,800 to coronavirus rapid response teams and 11 health facilities in Kajiado, Kilifi, Kwale, Machakos and Mombasa Counties. The company said that the donations include N95 masks, surgical gloves, coveralls, goggles, face shields and shoe covers. This will constitute part of the US$140,000 donations promised by the company to support the fight against the spread of Covid-19.

Group managing director Seddiq Hassani said, "During the cheque handover to the Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund Board earlier this year, we committed to continued support to Covid-19 management efforts and therefore, with the escalating numbers of Covid-19 cases, today we fulfil our promise with this donation to our frontline healthcare workers who continue to serve with fortitude by ensuring that they remain safe while serving Kenyans. We value their priceless role in battling Coronavirus. He added, We care for the community and we are determined to be part of the solution to this pandemic and make a difference for the benefit of us all.

Kenya: East African Portland Cement Company (EAPCC) has threatened recovery proceedings in relation to the alleged unlawful extraction of building materials on the producers land in Mavoko County by China Road and Bridges Corporation (CRBC). EAPCC says that it has twice contacted the construction company, which is engaged in building the Nairobi Expressway toll road, to order it to desist, according to the Business Daily newspaper.

Acting managing director Stephen Nthei said, The company cannot violate the countrys laws when constructing a commercial road. Any mining activities will devalue our land when we are eyeing prospective buyers. We might be forced to institute recovery proceedings against this company.

Iran: Cement production rose by 14.4% year-on-year to 35.6Mt in the first half of the local calendar year that started in March 2020 from 31.1Mt in the same period in the previous year. The sector exported 5.8Mt of cement with a value of US$128m to 28 countries according to the Mehr News Agency. India, Afghanistan, Russia, Iraq, Qatar, Kenya, Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China and Oman were among the export destinations of cement.

Kenya: A union representing 150 of East Africa Portland Cement Companys remaining 270 employees, who it made redundant on 1 September 2020, has rejected the companys offer to take back the workers on a three-year contract with a pay cut of 50%. The rehiring was to be the third phase in the producers programme to cut down its 936-strong workforce, according to the Business Daily newspaper.

Acting managing director Stephen Nthei said, We ran into teething issues between ourselves and the union. There were a few unionisable staff who did not sign, and that is what we are still discussing and agreeing. He added, Whatever we will discuss and agree between ourselves and the union will apply to everybody, even those who have signed. It should not be a discriminative procedure.

Rwanda: Kenya-based National Cement has begun selling its Simba brand cement on the Rwandan market. The New Times newspaper has reported that the company is aiming to compete against importers from further afield with cement produced at its Nakuru cement plant in Salgaa, Nakuru County in Kenya, thereby alleviating supply chain bottlenecks.

Kenya: East Africa Portland Cement Company has defaulted on a long-term loan from KCB Bank. The bank has demanded immediate repayment of the full loan, according to the Business Day newspaper. The cement producers current liabilities grew by 70% year-on-year to US$126m in the financial year to June 2019. In a report made to parliament Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu said, This movement was largely due to the transfer of long-term loans to current liabilities on account of default on existing loan covenants.

Kenya: Nairobi Business Ventures has shared plans for the establishment of a 1.0Mt/yr-capacity integrated cement plant following its 84% acquisition by UAE-based Delta International Holdings. Arab Finance News has reported that the former footwear producer is in the process of selecting a location for its upcoming plant and securing a source of clinker imports for the plants preliminary grinding-only phase.

Iran: Data from the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) shows that cement producers exported 5.85Mt of cement in the first five months of the local 2021 financial year, which began on 20 March 2020. The value of cement exports fell by 52% year-on-year to US$128m from US$266m, according to the Tehran Times newspaper. Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan were the top destination for the exports. Cement was also sent to India, Russia, Qatar, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China, and Oman.

Tanzania: Huaxin Cement has announced the completion of its acquisition of Kenya-based Athi River Mining (ARM) Cements Tanzanian subsidiary Maweni Limestone. Reuters has reported that Huaxin Cement will invest US$30m in completing upgrades to the companys plants in addition to an investment of US$116m to settle Maweni Limestones debts.
