which kind of oatmeal is healthiest: instant oatmeal, rolled oats, steel-cut oats, whole oat groats | cooking light

Its no secret that oatmeal is part of a healthy and balanced diet. However, of all the healthy whole grains out there, oatmeal seems to be one of the most complex. From steel-cut oats to old-fashioned rolled oats to whole oat groats, theres a plethora of oats to choose from on grocery store shelves. The ultimate question is, which one is the most nutritious? Are all oats created equal?

While steel-cut oats and rolled oats are generally viewed as some of the most nutritious oats, instant oatmealis more divisive. While instant oats are the saving grace of a hectic, time-crunched morning, theyre also more processed. On the other hand, less processed oats such as steel-cut oats and oat groats pack more flavor and texture, but they take much longer to cook. Yes, you can deploy clever shortcuts such as making overnight oats or using the slow cookerbut being a make-ahead breakfast warrior isnt always doable. When time is short, can instant oats be a healthy choice? And is there one type of oat that nutritionally shines above the rest?

To find the truth, we analyzed the nutrition factsof four commontypes of oatmeal, all of which are depicted belowwhole oat groats (top left), steel-cut oats (top right), rolled oats (bottom left), and instant oats (bottom right).

We based our analysis on grams, not cups, for a reason thats worth the explanation. Lets take a closer look at the serving sizes of two different oat typesrolled oats and oat groats. For dryrolled oats, one serving is cup or 48 grams, while for drywhole oat groats, oneserving is cup or 46 grams. While the cup measurement is different, the weight is relatively similar. Heres whyall oats start as whole oat groats, but theyre processed to cut down on cook time. As a result, oats come in different shapes and sizes. Oat groats, the least processed type of oat, resemble farro or wheat berries. Rolled oats, which are steamed and flattened, are more processed. While they are both the same oat, processing methods change their surface areas. For this reason, you can get a more accurate depiction of nutrition by relying on weight.

Frankly, all of them. All types of oatseven instant oatsare whole grains and are good sources of fiber and plant-based protein. The nutrition only varies slightly between each type of oat, with the major differences being cook time, texture, and flavor. While instant oats may appear to haveless protein and fiber, keep in mind that the serving size found on the package label we analyzed was a bit less than the other oats we used. If you want more protein and fiber from your instant oatmeal, simply adjust the serving size to cup.

Ultimately, the type of oat you choose is completely up to you. If you prefer a sweet, nutty taste and chewy consistency, try steel-cut oats. If you like your oatmeal creamy and smooth, then instant oats are your game. And if time is a factor, instant oats make a perfectly suitable healthy breakfast or quickenergizing snack.

When buying oatmeal, always check the ingredient list. No matter the type, there should only be one ingredient listedwhole-grain oats. Be wary of flavored instant oatmeal, as it can pack added sugars, extra sodium, and artificial ingredients. Instead, opt for plain instant oatmeal and top with a variety of nutrient-packed, sweet and savory toppings such as fresh berries, almond butter, Greek yogurt, sliced avocado, or a fried egg.

difference between quick cooking rolled oats & instant rolled oats | bob's red mill

Oatmeal is a classic breakfastand for a good reason. Its nutritious, inexpensive and can be prepared a number of different ways. Its easy to make, is full of texture and flavor and can be soothing to the soul and body. Plus, oats offer endless versatility and can be turned into oatmeal, muesli or even granola for a healthy and hearty breakfast. But one of the best parts about making oats in the morning is that its quick and tasty. Whether topped with dried fruit and nut butter or maple syrup and chia seeds, there are so many creative ways to make oats for breakfast. For those who are looking to get their dose of protein and fiber in the morning without slaving away in the kitchen, oats are the ultimate optionespecially on those busy mornings when everyone is running around trying to get out the door.

Although most oatmeal is pretty similar, different types of oatmeal take different amounts of time to prepare. Whether you go for the classic old fashioned rolled oats or the chewier steel cut variety, all types of oats will require different cooking times. Buying the right type of oats can help ensure that you not only get the taste and texture you want, but that your breakfast is ready in time so you dont feel stressed or rushed. With so much on the market, it can be confusing knowing what to purchase, but armed with the right knowledge, your mornings will be filled with oatmeal made just the way you like it, in just the right amount of time.

If youve ever shopped for a cereal grain that can be made into a quick and healthy breakfast, youve likely opted for options such as quick-cooking rolled oats or instant rolled oats. In fact, you may have even thought they were the same thing, and you may not have even been paying attention to which type you usually buy. Instant oats are often referred to as quick oats. Although quick-cooking rolled oats and instant rolled oats both cook more quickly than regular rolled oats, they are actually different.

Before we get into how the two compare, lets first go over the basics of what oats are. Your usual oatmeal is made of oat groats that have been removed from their outer hull. These oats are then lightly steamed and sent through a roller mill, where they are flattened to various thicknesses. Rolled oats can be rolled differently depending on how they are intended to be cooked. There are regular rolled oats, extra thick rolled oats, rolled quick oats and instant rolled oats. These tend to differ mainly in thickness.

Although quick-cooking rolled oats and instant rolled oats are both designed to provide a shorter cook time, there are some differences between the two types of oats. Quick-cooking rolled oats are quick, but instant oats are intended to be quicker. This means that they are rolled extra thin and milled finer than quick-cooking rolled oats for faster preparation. Another way instant oats are generally created for shorter prep time is that they are pre-cooked. Please note that neitherBob Red Mills Quick Cooking Rolled Oats norBob Red Mills Instant Rolled Oats are precooked, which means you can enjoy fresh oatmeal no matter how much time you have in the morning, and you dont have to sacrifice time.

Besides from being rolled and milled a specific way, quick-cooking rolled oats and instant rolled oats differ a bit in how theyre prepared, how long they take to make and their taste and texture. It might seem overwhelming at first, but their differences are actually quite simple. To help you make sure youre picking the right variety, heres everything you need to know about the difference between quick cooking rolled oats and instant oats.

Quick-cooking oats are usually designed to be cooked like regular oats on the stove top, just in less time. Since most instant oats are precooked, they are made to be cooked more quickly in the microwave. In fact, most instant oats come in little pre-packaged, smaller containers rather than the usual larger tin. However, Bobs Red Mill Instant Rolled Oats are different because theyre not pre-cooked, and they come in a large bag just like regular rolled oats. This means you can portion out how much you want, and you dont have to worry about any added ingredients you dont want, like preservatives and sugar. These instant oats are designed to cook in the microwave in just a few minutes. Quick cooking oats, on the other hand, can be cooked on the stove or in the microwave.

One of the main differences between quick cooking rolled oats and instant rolled oats is the cook time: instant rolled oats can be prepared faster than quick-cooking rolled oats, although they both cook faster than regular rolled oats. For comparison, regular rolled oats take about 10-20 minutes on the stove top, while quick-cooking rolled oats can be cooked on the stove in 1-5 minutes, depending on the consistency you desire. You can also add hot water to a bowl of these quick-cooking oats and let sit for 5 minutes, or zap them in the microwave for 20 seconds. For an even faster breakfast, instant oats can be ready in 1-2 minutesjust add hot water and microwave for 1-2 minutes.

Getting your oats prepared in the right amount of time is important, but you also want to make sure youre buying the right type of oats for your taste buds. Because people prepare their oatmeal bowls in different ways, you want to pick the type of oats that give you your desired texture. Regular rolled oats tend to be thicker than quick-cooking rolled oats and instant rolled oats, as the thicker the oat is, the longer it takes to cook. That means quick cooking rolled oats will be thinner than regular rolled oats, but instant rolled oats will be the smallest and thinnest.

Thankfully, quick-cooking rolled oats and instant rolled oats dont differ much in taste than regular rolled oats. They still retain that naturally sweet but nutty flavor, and they can be prepared with your usual oatmeal toppings. Their chewy texture and high dietary fiber make these oats an excellent grain to add to your breakfast routine. Theres no need to add extra brown sugar, maple syrup or other ingredients to make these premium oats taste better!

Oats are famous for being full of nutrients. They're a good source of both soluble and insoluble fiber, which can help improve your digestive system, help you feel full longer, and even assist with weight loss. They are high in protein and healthy fats, and they even have the best amino acid balance of all the cereal grain varieties. Eating oats can also have a positive effect on your cholesterol, your blood sugar, and your blood pressure.

Thankfully, you can rest easy knowing that both quick cooking rolled oats and instant rolled oats still retain their nutrients. Unlike many other instant oat brands, Bobs Red Mill Instant Rolled Oats are made from whole grain oats, including all of the wholesome germ, bran and endosperm from the oat groatnone of the nutritious bran has been removed. Additionally, because Bobs Red Mill oatmeal is just oats, you dont have to worry about any added chemicals, preservatives, sugar, dyes or artificial sweeteners that come in many pre-portioned packages.

Now that you know all the major differences between these types of oats, the last thing is figuring out when to use each type. All types of rolled oatsregular rolled oats, quick cooking rolled oats, and instant rolled oatscan, of course, be used to prepare oatmeal the regular way. However, you might want to be more particular when using your oats in items like baked goods. You can use quick cooking rolled oats in a baking recipe, but the texture will be a bit finer, which means if youre looking for something thicker or chewier, youre better off using regular rolled oats. However, if youre looking to make something a little finer, then youre good to go using quick-cooking rolled oatsthe difference isnt massive. Because instant rolled oats are significantly thinner and smaller than regular rolled oats, proceed with caution when using them in baking, and make sure youre making the right substitutions with the rest of the ingredients.

Overall, quick-cooking rolled oats and instant rolled oats really dont make a difference when it comes to taste and nutrition. Their chewy texture is slightly smaller and thinner than rolled oats, but they still can be used the same way and dont lose any of their benefits. The main difference with these oats is that theyre made smaller so they can be prepared faster. Quick-cooking rolled oats are great for when you want to cut down on time, but if youre really pressed, instant rolled oats are even better. Choosing what oat is right for you depends on your needs, how you like to prepare your oats, and how much time you have in the morning. But no matter which type of rolled oats you choose, you can rest assured knowing youre eating a high quality, nutritious, and delicious breakfast.

And whilst, admittedly, theres little that is new about porridge oats (weve been eating them for centuries and they remain a staple food around the world), theres certainly a renewed love for this healthy and nutritious breakfast meal.

Or if youre in a rush and heading out of the door, they can just as easily be covered with water or milk and microwaved for a couple of minutes. Dont forget to add your favourite toppings, such as honey or maple syrup. As well as fresh or dried fruits, nuts and seeds.

With a little advance preparation, overnight oats are brilliant for a grab and go breakfast in the morning too simply soak jumbo oats in liquid the night before (we love a good quality, freshly squeezed apple juice) and then top the next morning with chia seeds, berries or nuts.

For those who have an intolerance to rolled oats, you will be reassured to know that its now possible to buy gluten free rolled oats, safe in the knowledge that they have been thoroughly segregated, tested, and re-tested to confirm their gluten free status.

Welcome. You just found copycat recipes for all your favorite famous foods! Bestselling author and TV hostTodd Wilbur shows you how to easily duplicate the taste of iconic dishes and treats at home for less money than eating out. Todd's recipes are easy to follow and fun to make. New recipesare posted each week.

Milo Carlton opened the first Milos Hamburger Shop in Brirmingham, Alabama in 1946 serving hamburgers, pies and freshly brewed iced tea which customers would sweeten from a bowl of sugar on each table. But because of a sugar ration caused by the war, Milo was forced to do something no one had tried before: he took all the sugar bowls off of the tables and pre-sweetened the tea. When customers realized the tea was better than they could make themselves Milos Famous Sweet Tea became as popular as the food.

In the late 80s, Milos began selling the Famous Sweet Tea in gallon jugs in grocery stores in the Birmingham area, and it has been a growing successful product ever since, recently becoming a national brand.

To duplicate a Southern sweet tea like this, you absolutely must start with Southern tea bags, and that means Luzianne. This New Orleans tea company crafts its tea blend especially for iced tea. You will get the best clone of Southern-style sweet tea with this brand. If you cant find Luzianne, you can still make great tea with Lipton Iced Tea Bags.

Not having ever lived in the southern US my experience with this dessert was about as minimal as it gets. The first buttermilk pie I tasted was at Cracker Barrel and I was immediately hooked on the sweetened vanilla custard with its distinct, but not overwhelming, tang from the buttermilk and lemon juice, balanced with a sweet garnish of strawberries and whipped cream. Its a versatile dessert that is as well-suited for summertime get-togethers as it is for traditional southern winter holiday meals.

Now Ive tasted over a dozen variations of this decades-old favoriteall but one of them coming out of my own ovenon my quest to discover the best way to make Cracker Barrels popular dessert. And finally, I hacked it.

The beauty of this recipe is its simplicity: youll need just a handful of common ingredients, a whisk, and an unbaked pie shell. You can make your own pie shell using your favorite recipe or buy a frozen unbaked crust at the supermarket to save time. My pie shell was made by Marie Callenders and it was delicious.

Whisk together the filling in stages as described here, pour it into your pie shell, and bake it starting on the lowest rack so that the bottom of the pie gets browned. If you have a convection oven, this is a good time to use it so youre sure to get even browning on top.

Its not always on the menu at the huge Chinese take-out chain, but when this spicy special offering makes a limited-time-only appearance, Im there. When its not on the menu, no problem. Ill just grab some black bean paste at my local Asian market, and while Im there Ill get some dry Thai chilies to help perk things up.

This dish owes its great flavor to black bean paste, which is full of umami savoriness, just like soy sauce, so it enhances the taste of everything around it.You'll have a good laugh when you notice most recipes attempt to hack this dish with canned black beans. That's ridiculous since black bean paste is a traditional Asian flavoring ingredient made with fermented soybeans, not with black beans like the kind you get in your burrito at Chipotle.

Starbucks Frappuccino, the most famous blended coffee drink in the world, is actually a clone of this blended concoction invented at the California-based chain, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. In the mid-80s, a store manager at the Westwood, California location mixed diet drink powder with ice, milk, and coffee in a blender and was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was. They tweaked the recipe to include the chains chocolate powder instead of the diet powder, and a new hit product was born.

To make a clone of the popular vanilla version of the drink we must first make the secret flavoring powder that starts with a base of dry coffee creamer. I recommend using superfine sugar (Bakers sugar) and superfine salt (popcorn salt) if you can find them. The fine crystals will dissolve better in the cold drink. Youll also need vanilla extract powder, which can be found online.

Once your secret powder is made, measure 1/3 cup of it into a blender with ice, cold espresso, and milk, and blend on high until smooth. In a matter of just a few minutes, you will have a 16-ounce re-creation of the original blended coffee drink now served at 1,200 Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf locations in 30 countries.

I imagine a chef at Domino's in the middle of the development kitchen, surrounded by all the toppings they use on pizza, experimenting with new combinations of these ingredients, trying to come up with something delicious that isn't pizza. And then this dish happens: crispy chicken topped with garlic-Parmesan sauce, Cheddar-mozzarella cheese, bacon, tomato, and baked until gooey.

Using his grandfathers old recipes for sausage and smoked meats, Jack Link created his first kippered beef sticks in Wisconsin in 1986, and they quickly became a popular snack throughout the state. But that wasnt enough for Jack, so he invested in a packaging machine to expand into other markets, and eventuallywith the help of a successful Sasquatch-themed marketing campaignJack Links became the #1 jerky brand in the country.

Beef jerky is usually made in a dehydrator designed to circulate air around the food at a low temperature. The temperature for drying beef jerky in a dehydrator is typically 130 to 140 degrees, which is a lower temperature than you can reach with a conventional home oven. But that doesnt mean we cant use our home oven to make a perfectly acceptable beef jerky hack that tastes like Jacks. And even though Jack uses a smoker for his beef jerky, you wont need one to give your jerky a similar smoky flavor.

The pineapple juice in the marinade is an important part of the taste, but its primary contribution is a unique enzyme that helps break down the proteins in the tough cut of meat to tenderize it. Soy sauce and beef bouillon contribute to the umami savoriness of the jerky, and liquid hickory smoke is used in this hack as a quick way to add the smoky flavor.

The marinating takes 24 hours and the oven drying takes between 6 to 8 hours, so get the sliced beef into the bath in the morning and youll be munching on jerky by dinnertime the next day. And to help you out, I'm including step photos.

This 570-unit full-service chain has a sizeable menu, but its the thick 1/3-pound gourmet hamburgers, like this boomin bestseller, that bring in the crowds. And if youre a burger lover who enjoysburgers that bite back, this is the hack for you.

To assemble your own version of this big beauty, Ill first show you (with photos) how to make perfect crispy jalapeno coins and a simple chipotle aioli. The seasoning formula for the beef patty that Im including here is an updated and improved version of the secret sprinkle I hacked years ago, but this time well use easier-to-find ingredients.

Once youve prepped these components, its time to kick up the flames and grill some burgers. Top your burgers with pepper-Jack cheese, and assemble everything on sesame seed buns along with salsa, lettuce, and tomato. Then open wide.

This huge chicken chain offers seven delicious dressings to top three salad choices, and this is my current favorite of the bunch. The Avocado Lime Ranch Dressing is best on a Southwestern-style salad like the one on Chick-fil-As menu with mixed greens, black beans, corn, spicy chicken, and tortilla strips on top. But itll work on just about any mixed greens salad or burrito bowl you come up with at home or use it as a dip for chicken fingers, taquitos, and Southwestern eggrolls.

For a good home clone be sure to smash the avocado until no chunks remain and let the dressing sit for at least an hour before you use it so the dried herbs, onion, and garlic can rehydrate and the flavors can bloom.

Menu Description: A deliciously different way to taco. Tangy grilled chicken, sweet Asian chile sauce and dumpling sauce stuffed into crispy wonton shells and topped with a crunchy slaw and cilantro mix.

Re-creating this hit appetizer requires cloning four parts; none of which are difficult: Grilled chicken, coleslaw, secret dumpling sauce, and the crispy wonton shell to hold all of it together. For the chicken, well grill a couple of thighs and chop them up. Then well use bottled sweet chili sauceusually found in your grocery store where Asian foods are parkedto punch up the flavor.

The coleslaw is easy with a dressing thats only five ingredients. The slaw is best when it has some time to sit and wilt a bit, so plan ahead for the best flavor. You can slice the cabbage yourself, but a coleslaw kit thats a combo of sliced cabbage and shredded carrots is a big time-saver. Just measure out 4 cups of the cabbage blend and mix it with the minced cilantro and dressing.

Wonton taco shells are not a thing you can usually find in stores, so well make our own using wonton wrappers and a skillet of hot oil. When the oil is hot, add a wonton wrapper and use tongs to fold it over diagonally as it fries until its crispy on both sides. It takes less than a minute to fry each wonton taco shell, and youll get better at it as you go. Just be sure to leave plenty of room in the taco for the delicious fillings to come.

The sweet-and-savory breakfast sandwich made with two slices of French toast first appeared on the Burger King menu in 2019, but it was just for a limited time. In 2021, BK brought the breakfast sandwich back, and this time it came with a new ingredient: buttery maple spread. The first version of the sandwich was good, but the sequel with the new maple spread is great.

And thats right where this clone starts. The hack here for the buttery maple spread is just three ingredients and it will chill out in your fridge while you make the easy French toast. Find small, thin slices of white breadfor that. Sara Lee makes a loaf of bread called Delightful that works great.

The real French toast sandwiches come with either sausage, bacon, or ham, so pick your favorite and insert it between the egg and cheese. If your ingredients cool down as you are prepping, just pop each assembled sandwich into your microwave for about 15 seconds prior to serving for perfectly warmed French toast and gooey melted cheese.

Its about time for Top Secret Recipes to hack one of Starbucks all-time bestselling baked snacks. For this banana bread knock-off, I settled on a blend of both baking powder and baking soda for a good crumb and dark crust that perfectly resembles the original. And I decided it best to go big on the dark brown sugar, not only for flavor but also because the extra molasses in the darker brown sugar triggers a helpful leavening boost from the baking soda. Its also important to know that an accurate clone must have both walnuts and pecans in the mix, because thats whats really in it, according to the official Starbucks website ingredients info. All other copycats I saw got it wrong when it came to the nut blend, so if you want a true clone, this is the hack to bake.

At Cosmic Wings, Applebees second attempt at a virtual chicken wing chain, they have a code name for the Cheetos crumbs that coat their signature wings: Cheedle. The delivery-only wing chain debuted in February 2021 and has several other more traditional sauce flavors such as classic Buffalo, honey mustard, and spicy barbecue, but its the sauce made with Cheetos that puts the cosmic in the wings.

The concept is simple and the hack is straightforward once you pick your flavor or Cheetos to crush. Are you going with the more mellow regular cheese flavor Cheetos, or the kicked up Flamin Hot Cheetos? Pick your flavor and crush up some Cheedle in a food processor. If you dont have one of those you can put the Cheetos in a storage bag and whack on em with a kitchen mallet or rolling pin.

Fry some wings, baste them with a buttery sauce, and toss them in the Cheedle of your choice. And if Flamin Hot isnt hot enough for you, you could use Cheetos XXX Hot Flamin Hot Cheetos that are twice as hot as Flamin Hot, and youd have kicked-up version that isnt offered on the menu.

Taco Bells popular Cinnamon Twists are inspired by a traditional Mexican treat made by frying duros de harina until puffy, then sprinkling the crunchy spirals with cinnamon/sugar. Duros, or duritos, is a special pasta made with wheat flour and cornmeal or cornstarch that swells up in seconds in hot oil, transforming it into a light and crispy snack.

You can find duros in many shapes at Latin markets or online, but for this hack you want spirals that look like rotini. Most duros you find will likely be saltier and denser than what Taco Bell uses since the chain created a custom recipe for American palates.

It takes just 10 to 15 seconds for the pasta to puff up in the oilit will be sudden and dramatic and the duros crisps will float to the top. When they do, gently poke at them, and stir them around in the hot oil until they are evenly cooked. It only takes about a minute to fry each batch.

It was the creator of Pizza Huts Stuffed Crust Pizza who came up with the idea to cook bits of maple syrup into small pancakes for a new sweet-and-savory breakfast sandwich offering from the worlds #1 fast food chain. Tom Ryans idea became a reality in 2003 when the McGriddleswith maple-flavored griddle cake bunsdebuted on McDonalds breakfast menu, and the sandwich is still selling like hotcakes today.

To make four cloned McGriddles at home youll first need to produce eight perfectly round griddle cakes that are infused with sweet maple bits. Recipes that instruct you to make hard candy from maple syrup for this hack will fail to tell you that the shattered shards of hard candy don't completely melt when the griddle cakes are cooked resulting in a distinct crunch not found in the real McDonalds product. Also, breaking the hard maple candy into small uniform chunks is both difficult and messy. My solution was to make a flavorful maple gummy puck that could be neatly petite diced and sprinkled into the batter as it cooks.

Just be sure to use maple flavoring rather than maple extract for the maple gummy. Maple flavoring has a more intense flavor than the extract and the dark brown caramel coloring will make your maple bits look like pancake syrup. Youll also need one or two 3-inch rings to make griddle cakes that are the perfect size for your clones.

This super-spicy, slightly-sweet dipping sauce was introduced in the Fall of 2020 with the debut of the Spicy McNuggets, and it was the first new McDonalds dipping sauce since the 2017 re-release of the infamous Szechuan Sauce (sauce mob details and hackhere). The Mighty Hot Sauce was only offered for a limited time, and it vanished along with the Spicy McNuggets later that year. But not for long. Due to a social media outcry, Spicy McNuggets and Mighty Hot Sauce came back to the Golden Arches on February 1, 2021, for another limited-time-only run.

Now you can get that same heavenly Mighty Hot Sauce heat any time you want at home with this simple formula and use it as a dip for chicken fingers, wings, or whatever. This hack will give you about cup of the sauce, but feel free to double it for a mightier portion. Just add another 20 seconds to the cooking time.

As Pizza Hut veers away from salads its becoming harder to find their popular Italian dressing. Perhaps this is why weve been getting an increasing number of requests here to hack the endangered classic salad sauce before it becomes extinct. When a search for the salad dressing here in Las Vegas hit a dead end I was thankful for a TSR fan in Pennsylvania who was able to send me a giant 1-gallon bottle of the stuff that should last me though most of the decade.

Sure, its a lot of dressing, but the benefit of having an official bottle is that it comes with an official list of ingredients on the label. That was certainly helpful and informative, although I opted to not include the propylene glycol alginate (ick!) and xanthan gum in my version and kept it to simply basic ingredients, plus MSG. Monosodium glutamate is practically as safe as salt and its an important part of the umami flavor found in the original. A respectable clone cannot be made without this important ingredient, so include it if you want a perfect match. You can find MSG in stores in the spice aisle under the brand-name Accent or in bulk online.

For a great chicken tortilla soup that doesnt skimp on chicken and comes packed with other goodies like two kinds of beans, corn, chiles, onion, celery, garlic, and cilantro youll want to hack Chick-fil-As hearty version. Their soup is not only surprisingly good for a fast food chain, but it could also stand up to tortilla soups from any full-service chain, and these preparation secrets will guide you through a spot-on at-home clone.

The chicken is made the same way as in my Top Secret Recipe for Chick-fil-A Southwest Chicken Saladits brined for four hours to infuse it with flavor before it gets grilled. Keep that extra prep time in mind when planning your soup.

Chick-fil-A uses natural roasted chicken flavor in their version, and we can do the same by using Better Than Bouillon Roasted Chicken Base found in many stores and online. That particular ingredient will give you the best clone, but if you cant track it down you can also use regular bouillon cubes.

One of California Pizza Kitchens most popular globally-inspired pizzas is this fabulous pie topped with strips of marinated flank steak, cilantro pesto, and fire-roasted poblano pepper. I broke it down and hacked all the parts for youincluding the awesome salsa verde that goes on topso that you can assemble two beautiful pizzas that look and taste like the real thing.

Sometimes deliciousness requires patience, so be sure to plan this clone one day in advance to allow your dough to properly proof and the steak to fully marinate. You can also prep the pesto, salsa verde, and roasted poblano one day in advance so that when it comes time to make pizzas the next day, you just need to cook the carne asada, build the pizzas, and bake.

A popular staple of any Chinese chain is the fried rice so it better be good, and the version served at Panda Express most certainly is. Here's an easy hack when you need a stress-free, low-cost side for your entres. But I do suggest that you cook the white rice several hours or even a day or two before you plan to make the finished dish. I found that the cooked rice called for in this recipe works best when it's cold.

As for a shortcut, bagged frozen peas and carrots will save you from the hassle of petite-dicing carrots since the carrots in those bags are the perfect size to produce an identical clone. And they're already cooked.

Hacking Olive Gardens famous baked ziti would not be possible without a perfect clone of the chains popular five-cheese marinara sauce. I started with my previous hack of the plain marinara for Olive Gardens Chicken Parmigiana and enhanced it with the addition of five kinds of Italian cheese and heavy cream.

Determining which five types of cheese are in a prepared sauce is tough without some insider assistance, so before cooking I focused my efforts on convincing a server to ask the chef for the listand I got it! The blend of cheese used here in the sauce comes straight from the kitchen of my local Olive Garden. When you taste it youll know the intel was legit.

After the sauce is added to the pasta its topped with a cheese-and-breadcrumb mix called ziti topping, then its browned under a salamander (for the restaurant version) or a broiler (for your version). The result is a beautiful dish with great sauce and a cheesy topping that should satisfy even the pickiest baked ziti fanatics.

For 64 years KFC branded itself with the feelgood slogan Finger Lickin Good, but when the Coronavirus pandemic struck in 2020 that slogan didnt feel so good anymore and the chain put it on pause. That also meant that KFCs Finger Lickin Good Sauce, which I hacked here, was removed from the menu, and in its place KFC offers the new, and much better, KFC Sauce for dipping chicken fingers, popcorn chicken, and wings, or for slathering on a chicken sandwich.

Finger Lickin Good Sauce tasted similar to the dipping sauces you get at the chicken finger chains like Zaxbys and Raising Canes. But this new sauce is different. This time KFC seems to have been inspired by the sweet-and-smokey creamy mustard sauce at Chick-fil-A.

For our clone well use mostly regular Grey Poupon Dijon mustard, but since there are detectable mustard seeds in the sauce well also bring in just a little bit of Grey Poupon Country Dijon. This type of mustard contains the mustard seeds we need to give our sauce the perfect texture and flavor.

In November 2020, Taco Bell said adios to several classic items from their menu including Mexican Pizzaone of my long-time favoritesand anything with shredded chicken in it including the chicken soft taco. But teary goodbyes from fans of the tasty spiced chicken can be avoided if we have a good (and easy) recipe to craft a duplicate at home. Since the fast Mexican chain announced the changes several months in advance, I had time to work up a good hack before the tacos were gone forever.

After cooking the chicken several ways I settled on poaching the fillets in chicken broth, which kept them moist and added great umami flavor. When the chicken cooled, I shredded it, and added it to a sauce seasoned with spices and lime juice, and flavored with Knorr tomato chicken bouillon.

The Scoville heat rating of bhut jolokia, more commonly known as ghost pepper, is just over 1 million units, making it 200 times hotter than a jalapeno. But that didnt stop Popeyes from creating an eye-watering breading for their scorching new crispy wings. Yes, these are seriously spicy wings, but theyre not so extreme as to be inedible, and the awesome flavor is guaranteed to tempt you back for more. Don't be scared.

The hack for these breaded blazers starts by brining the wing segments in a buttermilk and pepper sauce marinade. Salt, MSG, and cayenne pepper sauce will fill the wings with flavor, and the breading, with a decent amount of ground ghost pepper in it, will bring on the sting. Ghost pepper has been quickly growing in popularity over the last several years, and you should have no trouble finding ground ghost pepper online. Even brick-and-mortar grocery stores are stocking it.

Still, ghost pepper is crazy hot, so be careful with it. You may even want to use gloves when breading these wings. Especially if youll need clean fingers later for putting in a contact lens, holding a baby, or any other activity not favorable to ferociously spicy digits.

The base formula for Jamba Juices seasonal smoothie consists of 2% milk, a couple scoops of sweetened frozen yogurt, and ice. The final addition is a scoop of a secret blend containing all the great flavor that makes this smoothie taste like youre drinking pumpkin pie.

Real canned pumpkin puree, plus sugar, spices, and a little food coloring will bring your smoothie to life with the taste and appearance of the limited-time-only smoothie that you can now make any time you want.

In 1997, I published a clone recipe forT.G.I Fridays Spicy Cajun Chicken Pastabecause it was one of the chains most popular dishes at the time. But as the years pass and menus get tweaked, old food favorites are decommissioned to make way for fresh, new ideas. Sometimes the new dishes are twists on old favorites, as is this improved version of the classic Spicy Cajun Chicken Pasta, which now includes extra-large shrimp and a better spicy alfredo sauce.

To make a home clone of this top entre from T.G.I. Fridays start with a quick brine for moist, flavorful chicken. Prep the chicken and creamy sauce in one pan; the shrimp, bell pepper, and garlic in another.

Like the wedges, these fries are coated with a flavorful batter, but the seasoning used on the fries is a different blend than what was used on the wedges. Are these new fries better than the classic wedges? That depends. Some may prefer the rare treat of fast food skin-on wedges, while others may prefer the crispiness of these new fries. Some dont care and just want a clone, so here you go.

The hack here is simplified by using par-fried French fries found in the freezer section of your store. After coating the fries with this clone of the seasoned breading, spray them with water, then fry them for 3 to 4 minutes. Thats it. Be sure to have a clean squirt bottle filled with water to transform the breading into a thin batter giving your finished product the same crispy coating as the original.

KFCs new fries are coated with a blend that includes onion, celery, and carrot powder. Its easy to find onion powder in most supermarkets, but I had to go online to find celery and carrot juice powders. The blend of vegetable powders adds great flavor, but if you want to omit the celery and carrot powders and just use onion powder, the recipe will still make delicious copycat fries.

To help fill the void left by a lack of dine-in customers when the coronavirus pandemic struck the U.S. in early 2020, restaurant operators had to get creative. That spring and summer we saw a surge in ghost kitchens and virtual restaurants where all the food was prepared for delivery only. Ghost kitchens are kitchens without seating and minimal, if any, signage. Virtual restaurants are delivery-only services where food is prepared in established restaurant kitchens.

It's Just Wings is a concept cooked up by Brinker, the team behind Chilis and Maggianos, with a menu limited to wings in three stylesbone-in, boneless, and smokedtossed in your choice of eight creative sauces or two dry rubs. Since I've already hacked a variety of traditional wings and boneless wings, I chose to clone this chain's stand-out smoked wings which are prepared in the same pecan wood smoking ovens (called Combitherms) Chilis uses to make baby back ribs.

The secret is to brine the chicken first, then blot it dry and rub the skin with oil to help make it crispy while it smokes. If you dont have a smoker, you can smoke the wings on your grill by heating one side of the grill and placing the wings on the other side. Set wood chips or pellets in foil over the heated side, then close the lid.

Ive included hack recipes for three of the chain's most notable sauces: Honey Sriracha, Honey Chipotle, and Truffle Hot Sauce. Pick one (or more), toss your wings in it, and dive in. Or maybe you just want to go naked? These wings also taste great without any sauce at all.

These candy-coated biscuit sticks come in dozens of flavors today, but for years the original chocolate flavor invented by Yoshiaki Koma in Japan in 1966 was the only Pocky you could eat. Almond and strawberry were introduced in the 70s, and as Pocky sales grew throughout Asia and the world, more flavors were added including the popular matcha and cookies and cream found just about everywhere these days.

Our homemade version starts by making a proper biscuit stick with a buttery flavor like the original. Well use real butter here rather than butter flavoring found in the real thing because we can. To give the stick its tender bite I found that pastry flour, with its lower gluten content, worked much better than all-purpose. I recommend Bobs Red Mill brand pastry flour. And to further tenderize the sticks well use both yeast and baking powder for leavening, just like the real ones.

You can make dozens of very thin sticks by rolling the dough to 1/8-inch thick and about 5 inches wide. Use a sharp paring knife guided by a straight edge, like a metal ruler, to slice 1/8-inch wide strips of dough and arrange them on a lined baking sheet. I found that chilling the rolled-out dough in your freezer for 10 minutes makes the dough more manageable and the thin strips of dough will be less likely to break as you work with them.

Three coating flavors are included here: Chocolate, strawberry and matcha. The chocolate coating is made with chocolate-flavored melting chips or chunks and melts easily in your microwave. The strawberry and matcha are made with white chocolate or vanilla melting chips, with strawberry oil and real matcha powder added for flavor.

In March 2020, Wendys entered the fast food breakfast wars with 18 new items, and the star that emerged from the bunch is a bacon-lovers dream. The Breakfast Baconator help lead Wendys to morning meal sales success in the midst of a pandemic, as other fast feeders, like McDonalds, struggled in the a.m.

Wendy's substantial sunrise sandwich is made with a square (of course) sausage patty, a fried egg, 2 slices of American cheese, and 6 halved bacon slices. That's good right there, but when you slather Wendy's delicious top secret Swiss cheese sauce onto a brioche bun, you've got something really special. And filling. All the building instructions are here, including an easy hack for the Swiss cheese sauce using just 4 ingredients!

One of the ingredientsSwiss cheese Singlesis what allows us to make a smooth, non-gritty sauce. If you cant find Singles, use any other brand of Swiss cheese product that contains sodium citrate. Thats the secret ingredient that helps make the sauce so creamy.

Its a good thing that Paneras delicious tomato soup is made with pear tomatoes so we can use canned San Marzano-style tomatoes for a quick and easy hack, and well pump up the tomato flavor with added tomato paste.

Other hacks will call for some form of broth here, but the broth is unnecessary and it's not in the real thing so a good clone recipe wouldn't include it. There is plenty of flavorful liquid in the canned tomatoes and well sculpt the final flavor with herbs and spices, sugar, and lemon juice.

The real recipe at the chain most likely includes chicken gizzard, but that ingredient is not always easy to find outside of buying a whole uncooked chicken that includes a bag of giblets tucked inside. So I set out to design a recipe without that ingredient and the results were great.

The secret to the fabulous taste, after all, is not found in the gizzard, but in the flavors contributed by the holy trinity of green pepper, onion, and celery salt; accentuated by the ground thyme and oregano.

Hard-boiled egg whites are breaded and fried until crispy, then filled with the creamy yolk mixture, sprinkled with smoked paprika, and topped with the best thing that ever topped a deviled egg: bacon candy!

We'll start with my preferred way to hard-boil the eggs, to get beautifully yellow yolks with no grey tint to them. Those bright yellow yolks are removed and flavored, then spooned back into the crispy breaded whites.

I'm also including my hack for cloning two slices of the chain's great brown sugar candied bacon. If you want to make extra bacon candy to munch on check out my recipe for Lazy Dog's Bacon Candy appetizer and youll get five slices of bacon candy. Thats two for these deviled eggs, and three for you to eat and share.

If you like candy and you like bacon its a sure bet that youll go crazy over bacon candy. Although the basic recipe of sugaring raw bacon and baking it until crispy is not at all complicated or secret, the variations of this simple formula are numerous. My goal was to try as many techniques as I could to figure out what works best, and then customize the recipe to duplicate the incredible bacon candy youll find on the appetizer menu at the fast-growing 44-unit Lazy Dog chain.

Lazy Dog knows that really good bacon candy should be more than just sweet and salty, so chefs there sprinkle in some black pepper and crushed red pepper flakes to perk up the party. Thick cut bacon works best here, and youll need a rack for the bacon to rest on while it bakes so air can move around the slices. And do yourself a favor: line the baking sheet with foil for an easier cleanup of the inevitable greasy, sugary mess.

This bacon candy is great on its own as a small appetizer, sprinkled with fresh parsley and served upright in a cup, just like in the restaurant. Or you can use the Bacon Candy as a garnish in this amazing hack for Lazy Dog Crispy Deviled Eggs.

The Southern-themed chain famous for its gift shops filled with made-in-America products and delicious homestyle food is also known to have a particularly good meatloaf. This dish ranks high in popularity, right up there with the Chicken n Dumplins and the Hash Brown Casserole, so a good hack is long overdue.

Making meatloaf is easy. Whats hard is making it taste like the meatloaf at Cracker Barrel which is tender and juicy, and flavored with onion, green pepper, and tomato. I sought to turn out a moist and tender loaf of meat, and one thats not dry and tough, but my first attempts were much too dense. I wasnt happy about that, but my dog was thrilled.

After playing around with the eggs-to-breadcrumbs-to-milk ratios and being careful to use gentle hands when combining everything and pressing it into the loaf pan, the final batch was a winner and I get to pass it along to you.

It's best to use a meatloaf pan here which has an insert that lets the fat drip to the bottom, away from the meat. A regular loaf pan will still work, but youll want to pour off the fat in the pan before slicing.

The Chesapeake brand of cookies from Pepperidge Farm are crispy cookies with a light crunch and filled with various chunks of chocolate and nutty bits. One of the most popular choices features big chunks of dark chocolate along with pecan bits, and it can be duplicated at home with a few twists to one of my chocolate chip cookie recipes.

Nestle makes a 10-ounce bag of oversized dark chocolate chips that are delicious and work nicely for this clone. If you cant find those, you can chop up a couple of your favorite dark chocolate bars into small chunks and add those to the mix.

Ive yet to taste a better habanero salsa at a quick-service Mexican chain than the one made daily at Qdoba Mexican Eats. Yes, it is very spicy, but the simple combo of fire-roasted habanero, tomatillo, and garlic is not as fiery as you might expect from a salsa that includes so much habanero in it.

And thats exactly what makes this salsa so good. Because the habanero peppers are roasted, and the seeds are removed, you can enjoy the complex flavor of the habanero without your taste buds being numbed by the heat. A good salsa should enhance your food, not upstage it.

You can roast the peppers in your oven or by holding them over the high flame of a gas stove with a skewer until the skins have charred to black. Resting the blackened peppers in a covered container for a few minutes will help to steam the skins, and they will wash off easily under cold water.

Crafting a clone of Olive Gardens signature Lasagna Classico became the perfect opportunity to create a beautiful multi-layered lasagna hack recipe that uses up the whole box of lasagna noodles and fills the baking pan all the way to the top. This Top Secret Recipe makes a lasagna that tips the scale at nearly 10 pounds and will feed hungry mouths for days, with every delicious layer copied directly from the carefully dissected Olive Garden original.

I found a few credible bits of intel in a video of an Olive Garden chef demonstrating what he claims is the real formula on a midday news show, but the recipe was abbreviated for TV and the chef left out some crucial information. One ingredient he conspicuously left out of the recipe is the secret layer of Cheddar cheese located near the middle of the stack. I wasnt expecting to find Cheddar in lasagna, but when I carefully separated the layers from several servings of the original dish, there was the golden melted cheesy goodness in every slice.

This clone recipe will make enough for 8 big portions, but if you make slightly smaller slices this is easily enough food to fill twelve lasagna-loving bellies. If you like lasagna, you're going to love this version.

This recipe was our #2 most popular in 2020. Check out the other four most unlocked recipes for the year: Rao's Homemade Marinara Sauce(#1),King's Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sweet Rolls(#3),Pei Wei Better Orange Chicken(#4),Chipotle Mexican Grill Carnitas(#5).

If you didnt know this salad came from Chick-fil-A you could easily be fooled into thinking it was a much more expensive salad from a casual chain like T.G.I. Fridays or Chilis. The bed of greens is built with crisp romaine, green leaf, and red leaf lettuce, and without a speck of tasteless iceberg in sight. On top of that are ingredients you dont associate with fast food, like grilled corn, black beans, roasted peppers, spicy chili lime pepitas, and crunchy tortilla chips. Everything works great together, and now I can show you how to make all of it for a spot-on home hack.

Chick-fil-A knows chicken, so of course the spicy chicken served on top of the salad is delicious. We can easily clone it by marinating chicken fillets in a special spicy brine for a few hours to infuse it with flavor and juiciness, then grilling it, chilling it, and slicing it thin.

The biggest star of the salad is the secret recipe that kitchen cloners have requested most: the creamy salsa dressing. To make your own version roast some peppers, mix those with the other ingredients in a blender until the dressing is smooth and creamy, and youll get a bright, spicy dressing thats perfect for this salad, or any other home-crafted salads in your future.

Imagine a giant soft sugar cookie with sweetened cream cheese on top and served warm as if it just came out of the oven and you have California Pizza Kitchen's Butter Cake, a delectable dessert described on the menu with five simple words: Trust usjust try it.

This dessert is an easy one to prep in the restaurant since the cakes are made ahead of time and chilled until ordered. Once an order comes in the cake is zapped for a minute in the microwave, then topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and surrounded by dollops of whipped cream. You can prepare yours this way at home as wellmake your cakes in advance, then chill them until dessert time. Or, you can serve the cakes right after they come out of the oven. Either way works.

The construction is an easy oneyoull need four 4-inch cake pans, or ramekins, or anything you can bake in that is 4-inches across. To make the batter I used a stand mixer with the paddle attachment and it worked great, but a hand-held granny mixer also works.

I know IKEA is a giant global furniture chain, but before researching these great little balls of meat, I wasn't aware that IKEA is also one of the world's largest food retailers. At the very top of the list of the most popular menu items at the stores' cafeteria-style IKEA Restaurant & Bistro, are the Swedish Meatballs which are consumed at a rate of 150 million each year. The meatballs are moist and delicious and come smothered in a cream sauce and served with a side of lingonberry jam. But if you don't' feel like working your way through the giant rat maze of furniture that is the ingenious layout of each store to get to a place of these meatballs, you can now make them at home with very little effort.

Korean chicken is famous for its extra crispy coating, and Bonchons recipeespecially the wingsis one of the best in the world. That chain's famous formula is why there are now over 340 Bonchon outlets in nine countries, including over one hundred in the US and more planned to open here in the near future.

The biggest challenge when recreating Korean chicken wings is finding the perfect magical mixture for the batter that fries to a golden brown, and with tender crispiness that stays crunchy long after the wings have been brushed with the flavorful glaze.

I knew that a traditional double-frying technique would help create the crunchy coating we needed, but it would take some trial-and-error to determine the best time splits. The wings are par-fried, rested, then fried again until done, but just how long to give each stage was yet to be determined since every recipe I found for Korean chicken used different times and temps. Some recipes even changed the temperature between frying steps, but I found those made the recipe too difficult to manage when frying multiple batches.

I eventually settled on 350 degrees F with most of the frying done up front in the par-fry stage. A three-ingredient batter is all thats needed for crispy golden-brown wings, and the soy garlic sauce is an easy hack thats made quickly in your microwave oven. The spicy version is made by adding Korean red chili paste (gochujang) and Korean red pepper powder (gochugaru) to the soy garlic recipe. You can find these ingredients at Asian markets or online, and if you like your wings spicy you'll want to add these perky ingredients.

I jumped at the chance to get another crack at hacking one of America's most famous chocolate chip cookies when I was faced with the challenge for my show, Top Secret Recipe. After all, this was the very first recipe I cloned over twenty-five years ago, and I've learned many new tricks for replicating the famous foodstuffs since then. Getting the chance to improve on my old secret recipes with new information was a golden opportunity to craft the best Mrs. Fields Chocolate Chip Cookie clone recipe ever revealed. So I hopped on a plane and headed to Salt Lake City to meet with Tim Casey, president and CEO of Mrs. Fields Cookies.

Tim showed me around the flavoring labs and test kitchens of Mrs. Fields HQ. I watched cookie dough being mixed, noting the oven temperature and length of time the cookies were baked. I was also able to discover one important trick I missed in my first recipe: after the dough was portioned out onto baking sheets, it was frozen. This way, when the cookies were baked, they came out crispy on the edges and soft and gooey in the middle. It made a huge difference!

The company was understandably vague on the specifics of the proprietary vanilla and chocolate chips they use in the cookies, but I discovered through taste tests that Madagascar vanilla extract and high-quality chocolate chips such as those made by Guittard (or even Ghirardelli) are the way to go.

There are many acceptable ways to formulate good queso, but to make this specific queso the ingredients must be correct, and most copycat recipes seem to get it wrong. A few recipes get one of the peppers and two of the cheeses right, but pretty much every recipe out there is a bit of a mess that I will now save you from.

Quesos can be made with a variety of cheeses that include queso fresco, asadero, and Muenster, but this particular queso includes a cheese you probably didnt expect: Swiss. That cheese is slow to melt, so well shred it first, along with the Jack. And youwon't need to gum up the queso with flour or cornstarch by making a roux because the white American cheese in the mix contains sodium citrate or sodium phosphateadditives that help the cheese melt smoothly and stay that way.

Authors of recipes that call for tomatoes in this dish havent looked closely. Those are red bell peppers and they are roasted, peeled, and seeded along with the poblano and jalapenos before they are diced and added to the cheese sauce. The sauce cooks on low heat, never bubbling, so that it stays smooth and creamy.

One of two pasta dishes currently on the pizza giants menu, the Meaty Marinara Pasta was first introduced in a 2008 April Fools publicity stunt when Pizza Hut claimed it was changing its name to Pasta Hut. No one fell for the prank but they did fall for the pasta, and that's why the Tuscani Creamy Chicken Alfredo Pasta and Meaty Marinara Pasta have been on the menu ever since. The sauce is the big secret here; it's simple and classic, but customized to produce a marinara with that distinct Pizza Hut taste. And the recipe will make more than enough pasta to go around.

The hack is an easy one. After browning the seasoned beef you add it to the sauce, simmer the sauce until thick, then spread it over one pound of rotini pasta in a baking dish in two layers so that every bite is filled with flavor. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella over the top and melt it until golden brown under your broiler. Boom! No one can resist. You rule.

The real Dole Whip is a non-dairy dessert that includes artificial flavoring, a small amount of real pineapple juice, and more gums than a candy store. Everything in this Hawaiian ice cream is combined in a powdered form including the pineapple juice in 4.4-pound bags that are sold to soft-serve machine operators at fairs, sporting events, and amusement parks. On the back of the Dole Whip mix are instructions to dissolve the powder in 2 gallons of cold tap water, then immediately pour the syrup into a soft serve machine and hit the switch.

Up until now, almost all recipes that claim to reproduce Dole Whipincluding one shared by Disneyland during the coronavirus outbreakinclude ice cream, to make what is supposed to be a "non-dairy" dessert one that is quite full of dairy. The results you get from these recipes may be tasty, but they are nothing like Dole Whip because Dole Whip is sorbet and sorbet isn't made with ice cream.

One thing that makes Dole Whip special is its creamy consistency, which may lead some people to believe it has dairy in it. Dole Whip creates this thickness with the assistance of six different natural gums and gels: cellulose gum, xanthan gum, locust bean gum, guar gum, karaya gum, and pectin. In addition, there is a small amount of coconut fat solids in the mix to help simulate the fat found in dairy.

For this hack, I limited the gels to two that are easy to find: unflavored gelatin and pectin. When these two ingredients are heated, then cooled, they form a gel similar to whats in the real Dole Whip, and the result is a thick-and-creamy consistency. Another trick often used to help thicken sorbets is the use of viscous corn syrup to replace much of the sugar. Corn syrup will give the sorbet body and it helps tone down the acidic pineapple juice.

But the best part of this Dole Whip copycat recipe, unlike the real thing, is that it contains all-natural ingredients and it's mostly made of real Dole pineapple juice, plus a little tangerine juice to round out the flavor and enrich the color. This homemade Dole Whip is ridiculously easy to make (you'll need an ice cream maker) and fans of the real thing will love it. Plus, now you can have this DIY Dole Whip whenever you wantno amusement park required.

Braised and shredded pork shoulder is a staple of Mexican cuisine that Chipotle prepares with a simple blend of flavors, and a surprising ingredient you may not have expected: juniper berries. Once you track those down (theyre easy to find online), the berries are combined with thyme and bay leaves in a braising liquid that will transform your own pork roast into an easily shreddable thing of beauty in under 3 hours. Then you can use your freshly cloned carnitas on tacos, in burritos, or in a bowl over rice and beans just like they do in the restaurant.

When picking your pork roast, try to find one without too much fat. If your roast has a thick cap of fat on it, trim off the excess. You want some fat in your braising liquid, but if the cap of fat is too thick, it may not fully render down and youll get chunks of fat in the shred.

Its often assumed that the pork butt is from the rear end of the pig, even though cuts from the back region already have a name: ham. The pork butt, also known as a Boston butt, is cut from the other end, the upper shoulder of the pig. Its called a butt because in pre-Revolutionary War New England the roasts were stored and transported in barrels called butts, and the confusing name stuck.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the famous green mint-flavored Shamrock Shake first served in 1970, McDonalds created this new minty McFlurry, with crumbled Oreo cookies mixed in. If youre a Shamrock Shake fan, youll go nuts over this new twist. You may never again crave a regular Shamrock Shake.

This dessert-in-a-cup is thicker than the traditional Shamrock shake since its made with soft-serve vanilla ice cream rather than milkshake mix. To simulate the thicker drink at home you mix the ice cream with milk, Shamrock syrup (made with the recipe below), and Oreo crumbs in a frozen glass or ceramic bowl. The cold bowl keeps the ingredients thick until you spoon everything into a glass.

A recipe for Portuguese sweet bread inspired the soft rolls that became a big hit at Robert Tiara's Bakery & Restaurant in Honolulu, Hawaii in the 1950s. It wasnt long before Robert changed the name of his thriving business to Kings Hawaiian, and in 1977 the company opened its first bakery on the mainland, in Torrance, California, to make the now-famous island sweet rolls sold in stores across the U.S.

Kings Hawaiian Rolls are similar to Texas Roadhouse Rolls in that they are both pillowy, sweet white rolls, so it made sense to dig out my Texas Roadhouse Rolls clone recipe and use it as a starting point. These new rolls had to be slightly softer and sweeter, so I made some adjustments and added a little egg for color. And by baking the dough in a high-rimmed baking pan with 24 dough balls placed snugly together, I ended up with beautiful rolls that rose nicely to the occasion, forming a tear-apart loaf just like the original, but with clean ingredients, and without the dough conditioners found in the packaged rolls.

For the dulce de leche well use a can of sweetened condensed milk, as do many traditional recipes. But I found that undiluted condensed milk produced caramel with an unpleasant canned-milk aftertaste. To improve the flavor, I first combined the condensed milk with whole milk, then cooked it down in a water bath the same way. The caramel sitting in the bottom of the pan was smooth and creamy, it tasted much better, and the process was as simple as it gets.

Turning to the vanilla sauce, I expected abasic formula atIHOP flavored with just vanilla extract, but I was pleasantly surprised to see real vanilla bean seeds in there. I excitedly added the seeds of a whole vanilla bean to our clone, in addition to the vanilla extract. But thats not all the flavor we need for a match. I taste some butterscotch in there as well, so Im including a little butterscotch flavoring in the final formula. If butterscotch isnt your thing, feel free to replace that flavoring with an equal amount of vanilla extract.

Im not sure why Einstein Bros. claims there are just four cheeses in the new Twice-Baked Hash Brown when the ingredients clearly list six kinds of cheese, plus cream cheese. Regardless, the shredded Asiago, Romano, Parmesan, provolone, and mozzarella listed there can be found combined in an Italian Blend at many supermarkets, making for an easy start to our home clone. And dont just be thinking about breakfast for these cheesy potatoes. They work great as a side for any meal.

In the detailed description of the new item, Einstein Bros. claims the hash browns contain two kinds of schmears, which is true, but a little misleading because one of them is just plain cream cheese. The other is onion-and-chive cream cheese, which we can make from scratch. Well combine those two shmears into one blend by doubling the cream cheese added to our onion-and-chive schmear formula.

Mix everything together and load the ingredients into a standard 12-cup muffin pan with circles of parchment paper cut out to fit into the bottom of the 12 cups. Without these parchment circles, the hash browns may stick and break when theyre released. You can also use paper muffin cups, if you dont mind the less crispy, ridged sides.

Bake them the first time for 30 minutes, then cool and store. Now you have a dozen servings of cheesy hash brown potatoes that are easy to finish off by baking them a second time until crispy. They are great served with breakfast, or for dinner as your starchy side alongside beef, chicken, lamb, and many other savory entrees.
