The Kiln Shell Laser is a measurement tool, which measures the deformations in rotary kilns or dryers or other slow rotating cylinders during operation. The tool can be used to measure just one cross section, a specific area containing a few cross sections of interest or the whole kiln to get the full picture. The steel shell of rotary kilns is exposed to high temperature. In case of excessive heat the shell might deform. In areas with deformations the refractory installation becomes typically difficult, which has a negative impact on its lifetime.

To measure the shape (roundness and eccentricity) of the shell, the Kiln Shell Laser is placed along the rotating kiln and measures continuously the distance to the shell surface. Deformations result in changes of the distance and will be recorded by the laptop PC, which is connected via Bluetooth with the laser. From each measured position a graph with the cross-section of the kiln is generated. Several measurements along the kiln can be combined in the software to a full 3d graph. The 3d graph shows the severity of the deformations in different colors. It is a great help to identify the areas where special attention to the refractory is required. In case of reduced refractory life time, due to shell deformation, the software helps to decide, which shell sections need to be replaced.

Indirect-fired kilns are used for various processing applications, such as when processing must occur in an inert environment, when working with finely divided solids, or when the processing environment must be tightly controlled.

Calcination refers to the process of heating a material to a temperature that will cause chemical dissociation (chemical separation). This process is used frequently in the creation of inorganic materials, for example, the dissociation of calcium carbonate to create calcium oxide and carbon dioxide.

Thermal desorption is also a separation process. This process uses heat to drive off a volatile component, such as a pesticide, from an inorganic mineral, such as sand. The component is vaporized at the increased temperature, causing a separation without combustion. In some cases, an indirect rotary kiln would be best for this application, because the volatile chemicals may be combustible. The indirect kiln will supply the heat for desorption, without the material coming into direct contact with the flame.

Organic combustion refers to the treatment of organic wastes with the intent of reducing mass and volume. Organic waste is treated in the kiln, leaving behind an ash with considerably less mass and volume. This allows for more efficient and effective deposit of waste materials into landfills.

Sintering is the process of heating a raw material to the point just before melting. This increases the strength of the material, and is commonly used in the proppant industry, where sand or ceramic materials are made stronger.

Heat setting involves bonding a heat resistant core mineral with another, less heat resistant coating material. Unlike an unheated coating process, here, a rotary kiln heats the coating material to just below liquefaction point, allowing it to coat the heat resistant core more evenly and more securely. This process is commonly seen in the manufacture of roofing granules, where a mineral such as granite is coated with a colored pigment, producing a product that is both durable and aesthetically pleasing.

Reduction roasting is the removal of oxygen from a component of an ore usually by using carbon monoxide (CO). The CO is typically supplied by mixing a carbonaceous material such as coal or coke with the ore or by feeding it separately. Examples are the reduction roasting of a hematite containing material to produce magnetite that can be magnetically separated. In the Waelz process, zinc oxide in steel mill wastes is reduced to metallic zinc and volatilized for recovery in the off-gas system.

The Rotary Inclinometer measures the axle inclinations of slow rotating parts during operation on Rotary Kilns, Dryers, or Ball Mill. Its extremely high accuracy makes rotary alignments on units work much easier.

The Inclinometer has to be attached on an axial surface of the rotating part, whose axle inclination needs to be measured (e.g. Girth Gear, Pinion, Kiln Tire, Kiln Roller). A high accurate inclination sensor, which is ingrate in the Inclinometer sends continuously values about its angle in respect to the gravity via Bluetooth connection to a Laptop PC. These high numbers of relative inclination values, which are taken during one or more revolutions, appear as a wave curve on the screen. The software fits a sine curve into the graph of the measured values and calculates the mean angle value. The inclination of the axis is equivalent to the fitted mean value of all these points and is calculated and displayed continuously during the measurement.

The MKM-System is an on-line measuring unit used to detect abnormalities during kiln operation which can lead to mechanical failures on any rotary kiln system (with more than 2 Stations). The main objective is to detect such abnormalities (thermal or permanent kiln cranks, lack of tire play) at an early stage.

The Ovality Sensor consists of a Deflection Plate, which will be attached with heat resistant magnets to the kiln shell close to a tire. Due to the strong magnetic connection, the deflection in the Deflection Plate follows the deflection of the kiln shell below. Strain gauges are measuring the deflection in the Deflection Plate. The electronic converter is amplifying and conditioning the signals from the strain gauges and sending them together with the values of the angle position sensor via Bluetooth connection to a laptop.
